Sekiyama Otaki Falls

A Spectacular Waterfall Surrounded by an Emerald-Green Gorge

Sekiyama Otaki Falls is a beautiful waterfall located along National Route 48 in Higashine, Yamagata Prefecture. Situated in the upper reaches of the Midaregawa River, part of the Mogami River system, the waterfall plunges dramatically through a gorge filled with unusual rock formations and huge boulders.

The waterfall is approximately 10 meters high and 15 meters wide. Its powerful flow and the beautiful emerald-green water in the plunge pool below are among its most distinctive attractions.

Surrounded by lush nature, Sekiyama Otaki is a peaceful and relatively little-known sightseeing spot where visitors can enjoy the refreshing sound of rushing water and the cool atmosphere of the gorge.

A Beautiful Plunge Pool Shining Emerald Green

One of the highlights of Sekiyama Otaki is the clear, emerald-green plunge pool beneath the waterfall.

The exceptionally clear water reflects the surrounding greenery, creating beautiful shades of green. The view from above is impressive, but visitors can also descend a set of stairs to get closer to the waterfall and experience the power of the rushing water from a different perspective.

Because the water is remarkably clear, iwana char, or Japanese char, can sometimes be seen in the river depending on the conditions. The pristine water offers a vivid reminder of the area’s natural environment.

A Dramatic View of the Falls from the Red Bridge

Sekiyama Otaki can be appreciated from above, but descending toward the plunge pool reveals a much more intimate view of the waterfall.

To reach the falls, visitors follow a narrow staircase with a noticeable slope and then cross a red bridge. The bridge is an excellent viewpoint for seeing the waterfall from close range.

From the bridge, the water can be seen rushing between the rocks, surrounded by lush greenery, while the emerald-green plunge pool creates a striking contrast. Together, these elements form a dynamic natural landscape.

Enjoy the Cool River in Summer

Summer is one of the pleasant seasons to visit Sekiyama Otaki. The gorge becomes surrounded by fresh green foliage, while sunlight reflects off the surface of the clear river.

The area around the waterfall also offers opportunities to enjoy playing in the river. The sound of the waterfall and the cool breeze moving through the gorge provide a refreshing escape from the summer heat.

A Gorge That Changes with the Seasons

Sekiyama Otaki displays a different character throughout the year. The scenery surrounding the waterfall changes with each season, offering a new experience depending on when you visit.

Spring – A Gorge Covered in Fresh Greenery

In spring, trees begin to sprout and the gorge is enveloped in vibrant fresh green foliage. The contrast between the young leaves and the clear flowing water creates a refreshing landscape that is ideal for a leisurely walk.

Summer – A Refreshing Landscape of Water and Greenery

Summer brings the deepest shades of green to the surrounding forest. The emerald-green plunge pool contrasts beautifully with the dense foliage, while the cool river attracts visitors looking to enjoy the refreshing natural surroundings.

Autumn – Sekiyama Otaki Surrounded by Colorful Leaves

From mid-October to early November, the gorge is transformed by autumn foliage, with the trees turning vivid shades of red and yellow.

The waterfall framed by colorful leaves takes on a particularly beautiful appearance that is quite different from the fresh greenery of spring and summer.

During this season, be sure to look for the nearby “O-katsura,” a giant Japanese katsura tree. Designated as a natural monument by Yamagata Prefecture, this magnificent old tree is another highlight of the area’s natural scenery and can be enjoyed together with the autumn colors.

Winter – A Waterfall in a Magical Snowy Landscape

In winter, snow covers the surrounding landscape, transforming Sekiyama Otaki into a peaceful scene of white. The waterfall continues to flow through the snow, creating an atmosphere completely different from that of summer.

The waterfall can be viewed from a location approximately one minute on foot from the parking area, making it relatively easy to enjoy the winter scenery even when the surrounding landscape is covered in snow.

Sekiyama Otaki is also illuminated at night, creating a magical atmosphere quite different from the daytime scenery.

The waterfall is beautifully lit from sunset until 8:30 p.m., highlighting the rushing water against the darkness. As the surrounding area grows darker, the illuminated waterfall becomes increasingly striking and takes on an almost mysterious appearance.

Around the nearby restaurant and facilities, indirect lighting is also used from sunset until 8:45 p.m., allowing visitors to enjoy the nighttime atmosphere of Sekiyama Otaki before or after a meal or rest.
