Sagae Park

A Scenic Park Famous for Cherry Blossoms and Azaleas on Mount Nagaoka

Sagae Park is a spacious park covering much of Mount Nagaoka, a hill rising approximately 160 meters above sea level in Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture. Thanks to its elevated location, the park offers panoramic views over Sagae City as well as the surrounding mountains, including Mount Gassan, the Zao Mountain Range, and the Asahi Mountain Range.

The park is home to approximately 700 cherry trees in the area known as “Sakura-no-Oka” and one of the largest azalea gardens in the Tohoku region. It also features sports facilities, historic buildings, and walking paths, making it a popular recreational area for local residents. Cherry blossoms in spring and colorful azaleas in early summer are among its highlights.

One of Tohoku’s Largest Azalea Gardens

One of Sagae Park’s most impressive attractions is its Azalea Garden, which is among the largest of its kind in the Tohoku region. Approximately 43,000 azalea plants representing 11 varieties cover the hillside, creating a spectacular display when they bloom.

A Wide Variety of Azaleas Blooming Over an Extended Period

The garden contains many different varieties, including Oomurasaki azaleas, Japanese azaleas, yellow Japanese azaleas, Benikirishima azaleas, Hinode azaleas, Kirishima azaleas, Ryukyu azaleas, Kurume azaleas, and wild azaleas.

The main flowering season is generally from early to late May. Because early- and late-blooming varieties flower at different times, visitors can enjoy the colorful display over a relatively long period.

The elevated position of the garden is another attraction. Beyond the flowers, visitors can look out across the Yamagata Basin. A wisteria trellis is also located in the park, adding purple wisteria blossoms to the colorful azalea landscape.

Azaleas Illuminated at Night

During the azalea flowering season, the garden is also illuminated at night. The colorful flowers take on a different and more atmospheric appearance under the lights, making the evening illumination a popular seasonal attraction.

“Sakura-no-Oka” with Approximately 700 Cherry Trees

Another major floral attraction is “Sakura-no-Oka,” or Cherry Blossom Hill. Approximately 700 cherry trees are planted here, including Somei Yoshino, beni-yamazakura, yaezakura, and Oshima cherry trees.

When the blossoms are in bloom, the entire hillside is transformed into a colorful spring landscape. Visitors can stroll among different varieties of cherry trees while enjoying views of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Gassan and the Asahi Mountain Range.

The combination of cherry blossoms and broad mountain views is one of the distinctive features of Sagae Park.

Sagae Cherry Blossom Festival and Illuminated Cherry Trees

The Sagae Cherry Blossom Festival is held each year from approximately mid- to late April. During the peak flowering period, the cherry trees are also illuminated, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of cherry blossoms at night.

The blossoms look different depending on the time of day: softly lit by spring sunlight during the day and dramatically highlighted by illumination after dark. Visiting at different times can therefore offer two distinct experiences.

A Spacious Park to Enjoy Throughout the Seasons

Sagae Park covers approximately 33.1 hectares. In addition to being a destination for seasonal flowers, it is a multifunctional park where visitors can enjoy walking, sports, nature, and local history.

The grounds include walking paths and recreation areas, as well as literary monuments and other points of interest. Visitors can take a leisurely walk while enjoying the changing natural scenery throughout the year, from spring cherry blossoms to early summer azaleas.

Sports Facilities for Recreation and Athletics

The park also contains several sports facilities used for local athletic activities, including an athletics track and a municipal baseball stadium.

Athletics Track

The park has an athletics track measuring 300 meters with six lanes.

Municipal Baseball Stadium

The municipal baseball stadium has a center-field distance of approximately 120 meters and side-field distances of 100 meters. It can accommodate approximately 2,500 spectators.

Historic Buildings and Sites

Beyond its natural scenery and sports facilities, Sagae Park also contains cultural sites that preserve the history of the Sagae area.

Former Nishimurayama County Office (Sagae City Local History Museum)

The Former Nishimurayama County Office is a historic building now used as the Sagae City Local History Museum. Visitors can learn about the history and culture of the local area and combine a visit to the museum with a walk through the park.

Former Nishimurayama County Assembly Hall

The Former Nishimurayama County Assembly Hall is another historic building preserved within the park. Exploring these buildings provides an opportunity to discover another side of the history of Mount Nagaoka and the surrounding region.

Site of the Nagaoka Civil Affairs Office

The park also preserves the site of the former Nagaoka Civil Affairs Office, providing another historical point of interest within the natural surroundings.

A Scenic Viewpoint Overlooking Sagae City

Because Sagae Park spreads across the elevated slopes of Mount Nagaoka, it is also an excellent scenic viewpoint. From various locations within the park, visitors can look across Sagae City and see the distant peaks of Mount Gassan, the Zao Mountain Range, and the Asahi Mountain Range.

The combination of seasonal flowers and expansive views of Yamagata’s mountains makes the park particularly attractive for photography. Visitors can take their time exploring the grounds while watching the scenery change with the seasons and weather.

A Free Public Park Opened in 1976

Sagae Park opened in April 1976. Since then, its extensive grounds have provided local residents with a place to enjoy flowers, sports, historic buildings, and leisurely walks.

Admission is free, making it easy to enjoy a casual stroll while experiencing the seasonal scenery. From cherry blossoms in spring and azaleas in May to the changing landscapes and historic sites throughout the year, Sagae Park is a pleasant destination for experiencing the scenery, nature, and history of Sagae.
