Konoji Temple (Yamazoe Village)

An Ancient Temple Nestled on Mount Kono

Konoji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple located in Yamazoe Village, Yamabe District, Nara Prefecture. It belongs to the Buzan branch of Shingon Buddhism and is known by the mountain name Hoshōzan. Its principal object of worship is Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Healing and Medicine.

The temple stands quietly on the southwestern slope of Mount Kono, a mountain that has long been revered as a sacred place where the divine resides. Surrounded by forests and peaceful mountain scenery, Konoji offers visitors a tranquil retreat steeped in history and religious tradition.

A Historic Temple Said to Have Been Founded by Gyoki

According to tradition, Konoji Temple was founded in 740, during the reign of Emperor Shomu, by the eminent Buddhist monk Gyoki. By the early Heian period (794–1185), it was already known as an important temple. Its location relatively close to Heijo-kyo, the ancient capital of Nara, helped establish connections with the imperial court and major Buddhist institutions.

The temple’s principal image, a seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai, is traditionally believed to have been made and enshrined by Gyoki himself. For centuries, worshippers have visited to pray for recovery from illness, good health, and physical well-being.

Shōtendō Hall and Important Cultural Heritage

A Place of Worship for Prosperity and Family Well-Being

Shōtendō Hall within the temple grounds is associated with blessings for family prosperity and business success. It continues to attract worshippers seeking good fortune in their personal and professional lives.

Konoji is also traditionally counted among the thirteen temples across the former provinces of Yamato, Yamashiro, and Settsu visited on a pilgrimage by Emperor Seiwa after his retirement. This association reflects the temple’s historical standing and religious significance.

A Buddhist Statue from the Asuka Period

Konoji preserves a bronze statue of a bodhisattva in a half-lotus seated posture, created during the Asuka period in the 7th century. The statue is designated a National Important Cultural Property.

It is currently deposited at the Nara National Museum, where it can be preserved and cared for appropriately. The statue remains an important testament to the temple’s long history and the development of Buddhist art in Japan.

A Temple Surrounded by Nature and Legends

Repeated fires destroyed much of the temple complex that once stood here. Today, the grounds still contain the main gate, inner gate, bell tower, main hall, and Shōtendō Hall, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the mountain temples of the Nara period.

The temple grounds are designated a scenic site by Yamazoe Village. In autumn, the area around the main gate is colored by brilliant foliage, adding seasonal beauty to the historic setting.

Behind the main hall stands a remarkable cedar tree known as Tengu Sugi. At approximately two meters above the ground, its trunk divides into three large sections. Associated with local legends of tengu—supernatural beings in Japanese folklore—the tree has long been an object of reverence among local residents.
