Menfudo Limestone Cave

A Mysterious Underground World Sculpted by Nature

Menfudo Limestone Cave is a beautiful and mysterious cave known for its richly shaped stalactites and stalagmites. Located in the mountains above Dorogawa in Tenkawa Village, Nara Prefecture, it extends for approximately 170 meters. Its largest chambers measure around 5–6 meters in diameter and more than 10 meters in height.

Situated at an elevation of 878 meters, the cave maintains a temperature of around 8°C throughout the year, making it a natural refrigerator even during the hottest summer months. Deep inside, visitors will find a stone statue of Fudo Myoo, a Buddhist deity associated with protection and spiritual discipline.

A Natural Underground Palace

The cave spreads beneath a hillside overlooking the traditional settlement of Dorogawa and is considered one of the largest limestone caves in the Kansai region. Inside, stalactites descend from the dome-shaped ceilings while stalagmites rise from the floor, creating an extraordinary collection of natural formations. Together, these structures form an enchanting underground landscape resembling a mysterious palace.

One of the cave’s most remarkable features is its delicate soda-straw stalactites. These slender, hollow formations resemble tiny drinking straws and are especially valuable natural features. The intricate shapes of the limestone formations reveal the extraordinary artistry of nature, created over immense periods of time through the interaction of water and rock.

A Cave Discovered in 1933

Menfudo Limestone Cave was discovered in 1933, and excavation work continued for five years. The Dorogawa area consists of sedimentary rock containing limestone. It is believed that a vast limestone cave once extended beneath much of the area now occupied by the village. Over time, sections of the original cave collapsed, leaving the present cave as a surviving part of this ancient underground system.

The cave was formed through a geological process in which rainwater containing carbon dioxide gradually dissolved limestone deposits, eventually creating large underground cavities. This process, associated with the development of karst landscapes, has shaped the remarkable formations visitors can see today.

Natural Sculptures Created Over Centuries

Limestone formations grow extremely slowly. A stalactite may take more than 100 years to extend by just one centimeter. The cave’s delicate formations therefore represent an almost unimaginable span of time, showcasing the artistic beauty created by the earth and water over countless generations.

Ride the “Dorokko” Monorail

Another enjoyable part of visiting Menfudo Limestone Cave is the ride on the small monorail affectionately known as the “Dorokko.” The ride adds a memorable element to the journey to the cave, where visitors can discover a fascinating underground world hidden beneath the mountains of Dorogawa.
