Mitarai Valley

A Hidden Gorge of Spectacular Scenery in Every Season

Mitarai Valley, located in Kitazumi, Tenkawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, is one of the Kansai region’s most beautiful natural destinations. The valley lies along the lower reaches of the Sanjogawa River, a tributary of the Amanogawa River in the Shingu River system, near its confluence with the Kawasako River. Over countless years, flowing water has carved through the rocks to create a dramatic landscape that continues to captivate visitors.

Surrounded by deep mountain forests, the valley features crystal-clear streams, enormous boulders, unusual rock formations, and waterfalls of various sizes. Its pristine scenery offers an escape from everyday life and makes it a wonderful destination for hiking, riverside walks, and photography. Mitarai Valley is one of the natural treasures of Tenkawa Village, where visitors can experience the rugged beauty of Japan’s mountainous interior.

How the Valley Was Formed

The Sanjogawa River originates in the Omine mountain range, gathering clear water from mountains renowned as sacred sites of Shugendo, a Japanese mountain ascetic tradition. In its upper reaches, the river flows through the Dorogawa Onsen area, where the scenery is relatively open and tranquil. However, the landscape changes dramatically near Abut Tunnel.

Beyond this point, steep mountains close in around the river, creating the dramatic terrain characteristic of a deep gorge. Over centuries, the force of the water has eroded the bedrock, forming deep pools, precipitous cliffs, and intricate rock surfaces. These natural features give Mitarai Valley its distinctive and powerful appearance.

Four Seasons of Natural Beauty

Spring: Fresh Greenery

In spring, the valley is enveloped in fresh green foliage. Newly sprouted leaves shimmer in the sunlight, creating a refreshing contrast with the clear blue-green water. Walking through the gorge as nature awakens from winter brings a sense of calm and renewal.

Summer: Cool Streams and Waterfalls

During summer, Mitarai Valley is a popular retreat from the heat. The stream remains remarkably cold, while the spray from cascading waterfalls brings a refreshing coolness to the surrounding air. Plants such as river azaleas add touches of color along the banks, complementing the lush green forests and making the valley an inviting place for a summer walk.

Autumn: Brilliant Fall Colors

Autumn transforms the valley into a tapestry of red, yellow, and orange. Maples, other colorful foliage trees, and beech trees brighten the gorge, creating scenery that resembles a traditional Japanese landscape painting. The autumn colors usually reach their peak from late October to mid-November, making Mitarai Valley one of the Kansai region’s celebrated destinations for fall foliage.

Winter: A Quiet, Ink-Painting Landscape

In winter, fewer visitors come to the valley, and the landscape takes on a quiet, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Snow-covered rocks and trees, together with waterfalls softened by white mist, create scenes reminiscent of traditional Japanese ink paintings. The valley’s winter beauty offers a striking contrast to its vibrant spring, summer, and autumn landscapes.

A Seven-Kilometer Riverside Walking Trail

A walking trail of approximately seven kilometers follows the river through Mitarai Valley. Much of the route is maintained for visitors, allowing people to enjoy the scenery on foot. Several suspension bridges cross the gorge, offering views down to the clear stream and waterfalls below.

One of the most striking sights is a mysterious pool whose water glows emerald green. The valley also features substantial changes in elevation, with waterfalls cascading down from towering rock walls along the mountainsides. As the trail progresses, a succession of waterfalls and dramatic rock formations reveals the remarkable power of nature.

A Rare Environment of Natural Forest

The forests surrounding Mitarai Valley retain extensive areas of natural woodland that have experienced little human intervention. A wide variety of trees grows here, providing habitats for wild birds, insects, and other wildlife. The area is also appealing to visitors interested in observing nature.

With relatively few artificial structures, the valley preserves a rugged, almost primordial atmosphere. It is an ideal destination for those who want to leave behind the noise of modern life and spend time immersed in the natural world.

Hiking Through Mitarai Valley

Mitarai Valley is a popular hiking destination, with the full route taking approximately two and a half hours to complete. Its manageable distance and moderate changes in elevation make it an enjoyable way to experience the mountain scenery, although visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and steps.

Overview of the Hiking Route

The route begins near the Ten no Kawaai intersection, where hikers cross a suspension bridge and follow the river upstream. Along the way, clear water, enormous boulders, and impressive waterfalls appear in succession, providing constantly changing views throughout the walk.

After climbing a series of steps, hikers reach a mysterious spot known as Hikari no Taki, or the Waterfall of Light, where sunlight and flowing water combine to create an enchanting scene. The trail then meets a road near the Kannonmine trailhead before continuing along a gentle mountain path toward Dorogawa Onsen Center.

Dorogawa Onsen Visitor Center

On April 25, 2024, the Dorogawa Onsen Visitor Center opened as a new base for hiking and mountain excursions. The facility replaced the former Dorogawa Onsen Center, which had been built in 1993 and had become outdated.

Visitors can enjoy a day-use bath, rest in the lounge areas, and obtain tourist information. It is a convenient place to relax after exploring the valley or hiking in the surrounding mountains. Spacious, clean restroom facilities also make it a useful stop for visitors.

Tips for a Comfortable Visit

The valley can become crowded on weekends and public holidays during summer and the autumn foliage season. Parking areas and walking trails may be particularly busy at these times, so visiting on a weekday is recommended for a more relaxed experience.

Some sections of National Route 309 are narrow, so drivers should take extra care when approaching the area and allow plenty of time for the journey.
