Persimmons from Nara Prefecture

One of Japan’s Leading Persimmon-Producing Regions

Persimmons from Nara Prefecture are renowned throughout Japan for their excellent quality and abundant harvests. The prefecture is one of the country’s leading producers of this popular autumn fruit, supplying markets nationwide with persimmons prized for their sweetness, texture, and flavor.

The harvest season begins with the early-ripening Tone Wase variety, followed by Hiratanenashi and Fuyu. These varieties extend the persimmon season through December, giving visitors several months to enjoy the fruit at its best.

Persimmon Cultivation in Gojo and Nishiyoshino

The city of Gojo, particularly the Nishiyoshino area, is a major center of persimmon production. During the peak of the harvest, shipments from the area can reach approximately 200 metric tons in a single day, illustrating the scale of the local industry.

Nara’s natural environment is well suited to growing persimmons. Differences in temperature throughout the day and across the seasons, together with the region’s climate and terrain, help create favorable conditions for producing high-quality fruit.

A Fruit Valued for Its Nutritional Benefits

In Japan, a traditional saying declares, “When persimmons turn red, doctors turn pale,” reflecting the fruit’s long-standing reputation as a healthy food. Persimmons contain vitamin C, dietary fiber, and polyphenols, making them a nutritious addition to a balanced diet.

They can be enjoyed fresh when ripe, offering a naturally sweet flavor and soft, juicy texture. Persimmons are also used in regional sweets and other products, including dried persimmons, which concentrate the fruit’s sweetness and are enjoyed as a traditional Japanese treat.

Seasonal Availability

Peak season: September to December.

Autumn is an excellent time to explore the mountain communities of southern Nara and sample locally grown persimmons. With several varieties ripening in succession, the region offers a delicious way to experience one of Japan’s most beloved seasonal fruits.
