Ryugujo Observatory

A Scenic Viewpoint Inspired by the Dragon Palace

Ryugujo Observatory is a three-story observation tower on Kurima Island, a small island located southwest of Miyako Island. The tower is designed to evoke the image of Ryugujo, the mythical Dragon Palace from Japanese and Okinawan folklore.

Kurima Island can be reached by crossing the approximately 1,690-meter-long Kurima Bridge from Miyako Island. After crossing the bridge, continue straight through the island’s settlement, and the observatory can be found on the right-hand side of the road.

Panoramic Views across the Islands

From the three-story observation tower, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The peaceful scenery includes broad fields of sugarcane, while the view extends across the sea toward Miyako Island and Irabu Island.

The combination of tropical farmland, brilliant blue ocean, and neighboring islands creates a relaxed panoramic landscape that is especially enjoyable on a clear day.

A Convenient Park for Travelers

The area surrounding Ryugujo Observatory has been developed as a park, making it a convenient place to stop while exploring Kurima Island.

Facilities include a free parking area, shops, a café, restrooms, and showers. Visitors can therefore take a break, enjoy refreshments, and spend some time taking in the scenery without having to hurry.

A Useful Stop Before or After Nagamahama Beach

Ryugujo Observatory is also a practical base for visitors planning to enjoy the sea around Nagamahama Beach, located at the southwestern end of Kurima Island.

Nagamahama is a beautiful natural beach known for its white sand, clear water, coral reefs, and spectacular sunsets, but it does not have shower facilities. The showers at Ryugujo Observatory can therefore be particularly convenient for travelers enjoying marine activities at the beach.

Relax with a View of Kurima Bridge

One of the pleasures of visiting the observatory is simply taking time to admire the view. From the tower and surrounding park, visitors can look back toward Kurima Bridge and across the sea toward Miyako Island.

Rather than being a viewpoint that requires a long hike, Ryugujo Observatory is an easy place to stop during a sightseeing drive around the island.

Discover the Landscapes of Kurima Island

With its distinctive Dragon Palace-inspired design, wide views, tropical sugarcane fields, and convenient facilities, Ryugujo Observatory is one of the most accessible scenic spots on Kurima Island.

Take a moment to climb the tower, enjoy the panoramic view, and watch the blue waters surrounding the islands. For travelers exploring Miyako Island by car, it is an ideal place to slow down and experience the peaceful atmosphere of Kurima Island.
