This is a 28.7 km long, full-scale mountain sightseeing road that traverses the Azuma Mountain Range.
It runs from Takayu Onsen in Fukushima City along the eastern side of the Azuma Mountain Range in Bandai-Asahi National Park, passing through Jododaira and ending at Tsuchiyu Pass.
Located in Bandai-Asahi National Park, the road is blessed with a large scale view of the Zao mountain range in the distance and Mount Adatara and Mount Bandai on either side.
The road offers a richly varied landscape around every corner.
The average elevation is 1,350 meters, and the highest elevation is 1,622 meters, with a difference in elevation of about 850 meters from Takayu Onsen, the starting point on the north side.
At the lower elevations, the area is deeply forested with many trees, but as the elevation rises, dead trees begin to stand out.
Passing through several hot spring resorts with the smell of sulfur, the landscape near the summit is desolate with bare rock surfaces.
The snowy corridor in spring, the fresh greenery in early summer, and the autumn leaves in fall are all attractive in each season.
The trail is accessible from early April to mid-November. In winter, the road is closed due to icy and snowy conditions.
The road has been selected as one of the 100 best roads in Japan.
Bandai-Azuma Skyline used to be a toll road for mountain tourism, but it is now open to traffic free of charge.
