Chiba City Folk Museum

Discover the History of the Chiba Clan

Chiba City Folk Museum is located on the historic site of Inohana Castle in Chuo Ward, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture. The area is closely associated with the Chiba clan, a powerful medieval family that played an important role in the development of the region.

The museum features permanent and special exhibitions introducing the history of Chiba City and the Chiba clan. The museum building itself is a reconstructed castle-style structure modeled on a medieval Japanese castle from before the development of the familiar castle keep, or tenshu.

Its impressive appearance makes it a prominent landmark in Inohana Park. During the annual cherry blossom festival, the building is illuminated at night, creating a particularly atmospheric view.

Inohana Castle: A Historic Site Connected with Chiba

Inohana Castle, also commonly called Chiba Castle, was a historic Japanese castle located in what is now Chuo Ward, Chiba City. It was known as an important base of the Chiba clan, who ruled the area around what was historically known as Shimosa Province.

The former castle site has been developed as Inohana Park. Remains such as earthen embankments and dry moats can still be found, and these archaeological features have been designated as cultural properties of Chiba City.

Although the present museum building is a reconstructed castle-style structure rather than the original castle, its location provides an appropriate setting for learning about the history of the Chiba clan and the development of the surrounding region.

Museum Structure and Exhibitions

The Chiba City Folk Museum is a five-story building, with a total exhibition floor area of approximately 2,416 square meters. Each floor focuses on a different aspect of Chiba’s history, allowing visitors to follow the development of the region over time.

1st Floor: Multipurpose Exhibition Area and Lecture Room

The first floor contains a spacious lecture room and exhibition areas used for various exhibitions and events.

Basic displays introduce the history of Chiba City and the Chiba clan, making this a useful starting point for visitors who are unfamiliar with the region’s history.

2nd Floor: The Development of the Chiba Clan and Medieval Chiba

The second floor focuses on the history of the Chiba clan and medieval Chiba. Exhibits, historical materials, and models explain how the clan governed the region and how Chiba developed during the medieval period.

By examining these materials, visitors can gain a better understanding of the political and social history of the area around present-day Chiba City.

3rd Floor: The Decline of the Chiba Clan and Regional Change

The third floor explores the gradual decline of the Chiba clan and the subsequent changes that took place in the region.

The museum’s collection also includes historical materials that are not currently on display. These materials are carefully preserved in storage areas as part of the museum’s efforts to protect the historical heritage of Chiba.

4th Floor: Modern and Contemporary Chiba

The fourth floor introduces the history of Chiba from the modern period through the present day.

The space was originally used as a planetarium room before being renovated. Today, it presents the transformation and development of Chiba City into the modern urban center seen today.

5th Floor: Panoramic Observation Room

The top floor contains an observation room offering wide views across Chiba City and Chiba Port.

On clear days, visitors may also be able to see Mount Fuji in the distance. The panoramic view makes the observation room one of the museum’s most popular features.

Tea House and Garden

Adjacent to the museum is a traditional-style tea house and garden where visitors can enjoy Japanese sweets and take a relaxing break.

After exploring the museum’s historical exhibitions, spending some quiet time in the Japanese-style surroundings offers a pleasant way to experience another aspect of local culture.

Inohana Park: A Popular Cherry Blossom Destination

The historic site of Inohana Castle is now surrounded by Inohana Park, which is also well known as a cherry blossom viewing destination.

In spring, the park hosts the Chiba Castle Cherry Blossom Festival. When the cherry trees reach full bloom, visitors can enjoy traditional hanami, the Japanese custom of appreciating cherry blossoms.

The combination of the historic castle site, the museum’s castle-like silhouette, and the pink blossoms creates an especially attractive landscape. During the festival period, the museum building is also illuminated after dark, giving the area a different atmosphere from its daytime appearance.

History of the Chiba City Folk Museum

From Local History Museum to the Present Facility

The history of the museum dates back to 1966, when construction of the original main building began. It was completed the following year and opened as the Chiba City Local History Museum.

After subsequent organizational changes within Chiba City, the museum was transferred through different administrative departments and eventually renamed the Chiba City Folk Museum in 1983.

It developed as a museum specializing in local history and folk culture. In 2000, seismic reinforcement work was carried out, followed by a renewed opening in 2001.

Renewal for Chiba’s 900th Anniversary

In preparation for 2026, the 900th anniversary of the founding of Chiba, renovation work was planned from September 30, 2024, through the end of October 2025.

The renewal project was intended to provide improved exhibitions and facilities, helping more visitors experience the history and culture of Chiba in an accessible way.
