Ichihara Elephant Kingdom is a popular zoo and wildlife park located in Yamakogawa, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture. It is particularly well known for its large elephant collection and its close-up animal experiences.
The park keeps 10 elephants, including nine Asian elephants and one African elephant, making it one of the largest elephant collections in Japan. In addition to the main park, Ichihara Elephant Kingdom operates the satellite parks Sayuri World and Katsuura Elephant Paradise. Together, these facilities are presented as the Animal Wonder Resort, offering visitors a variety of memorable encounters with animals.
Rather than simply viewing animals from a distance, the park places particular emphasis on close interaction between visitors and animals. This makes it an especially attractive destination for families and travelers looking for an unusual wildlife experience in Chiba.
Ichihara Elephant Kingdom first opened on April 28, 1989, under the name Yamakogawa Farm Animal Club. The facility was established with Shonan Animal Production as its parent organization.
In 1996, it was renamed Ichihara Elephant Kingdom, the name it uses today. The park subsequently became a member of the Japanese Association of Zoos and Aquariums and continued to develop its animal exhibits and visitor experiences.
The park covers approximately 3.5 hectares and is located at 937 Yamakogawa, Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture.
Approximately 70 species and around 350 animals and birds are kept at the park. While elephants are the main attraction, visitors can also encounter a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, and other animals.
The park is designed to allow visitors to get relatively close to many of its animals. This emphasis on interaction makes it possible to discover animal behavior and characteristics through direct observation and hands-on experiences.
The park has continued to evolve since its opening in 1989. Important milestones in its history include the following:
1989: Opened as Yamakogawa Farm Animal Club.
1996: Renamed Ichihara Elephant Kingdom.
1998: Shonan Animal Production Co., Ltd. was renamed Tetsumu Co., Ltd.
2005: Katsuura Elephant Paradise opened in Katsuura City, Chiba.
2011: Sayuri World and PENSION OWL began opening operations.
2021: The facilities were renewed and reopened as the Animal Wonder Resort.
Elephants are the stars of Ichihara Elephant Kingdom. The park is home to 10 elephants, including Asian and African elephants.
One of the best-known attractions is the Elephant Performance Time, during which the elephants demonstrate a variety of behaviors and skills.
Visitors can also experience special activities such as Elephant Riding, in which they ride on an elephant’s back, and Elephant Lift, which allows participants to be lifted by an elephant’s trunk.
These activities are supported by experienced mahouts, or traditional elephant handlers, from Thailand. Their knowledge and experience play an important role in the safe management of the elephant experiences.
The park also has an educational facility called the Elephant Knowledge Center. Exhibits introduce information about elephant biology, behavior, and the history of elephant keeping in Japan.
The center provides visitors with an opportunity to learn more about these remarkable animals and to deepen their understanding of elephant conservation and care.
Although elephants are the main attraction, the park is also home to many other fascinating animals. These include hippos, llamas, eastern grey kangaroos, Japanese macaques, and tufted capuchins.
Visitors can also encounter Cape penguins, chimpanzees, red pandas, raccoons, binturongs, saltwater crocodiles, mara, capybaras, and emus.
The bird collection includes pink-backed pelicans, European flamingos, Indian peafowl, and Andean condors. Reptiles such as green iguanas and African spurred tortoises are also exhibited, along with reindeer and Japanese raccoon dogs.
Ichihara Elephant Kingdom is also known for several unusual stories involving its animals and their histories.
The park is home to the grave of “Yoshida-kun,” a cow that appeared on the popular Japanese television program Ore-tachi Hyokin-zoku.
The chimpanzee Smile also has a notable family connection. Smile is a half-sibling of Pankun, a famous chimpanzee living at Aso Cuddly Dominion in Kumamoto Prefecture, and is the uncle of Pankun’s daughter, Purin.
Sayuri World is a satellite park of Ichihara Elephant Kingdom that focuses on close encounters with animals.
