Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens

A Peaceful Park Where You Can Meet Animals and Plants

Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens is a municipal zoo and botanical garden located in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo. The facility opened on August 21, 1987, and offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy both wildlife and nature in a spacious park setting.

The zoo is particularly popular with families because visitors can see a wide variety of animals and, in some areas, enjoy close-up experiences with smaller animals. One of its best-known attractions is the adorable “Otter Slide”, where Asian small-clawed otters move through a series of pipes. The sight of the otters traveling through the pipes has become one of the park’s memorable attractions.

A Zoo Surrounded by Greenery

The grounds combine animal exhibits with a botanical garden, ornamental plant displays, and a rose garden. This makes Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens different from a traditional zoo, as visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers and greenery as well as wildlife.

Near the entrance are a rest house and the Natural History Museum, where visitors can learn about animals through specimens and educational displays. There is also a small railway known as the “Mini Railway”, which is especially popular with children and families.

The Famous Otter Slide

In the summer of 2013, a special feature called the “Otter Slide” was introduced at the Asian small-clawed otter exhibit. The attraction uses pipes that allow the otters to move between different parts of their enclosure.

The playful behavior of the otters quickly attracted attention. Watching these small, energetic animals travel through the pipes is a fun experience and one of the highlights of a visit to the zoo.

Animals You Can See

Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens is home to a variety of mammals and birds. The exhibits are designed to give visitors opportunities to observe animals in environments suited to their characteristics while learning about their behavior and lifestyles.

Japanese Macaque Mountain and the Farm Animal Area

At the center of the zoo is Japanese Macaque Mountain, where Japanese macaques can be observed as they interact with one another. Their social behavior makes this area particularly interesting for visitors.

Nearby are a farm animal area and the “Nakayoshi Square”, a hands-on area where visitors can get closer to animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and miniature pigs. These encounters can be an enjoyable introduction to animals for young children.

Flying Cage

The Flying Cage is a large aviary where birds can move freely through a spacious enclosure. Nearly 40 birds live in the aviary, allowing visitors to observe their natural movements from relatively close range.

Among the birds on display are white storks, flamingos, and ibises, including species that visitors may not often have the opportunity to see up close. The aviary provides a different perspective from conventional bird cages and is a rewarding stop for bird lovers.

Animal Ambassadors from International Friendship Cities

Some animals at the zoo were presented by cities that have friendly relations with Ichikawa and are kept as animal ambassadors. These animals also represent the international connections between Ichikawa and its partner cities.

Chinese Red Pandas

In 1986, Chinese red pandas were presented to Ichikawa from Leshan, Sichuan Province, China. The zoo has continued to exhibit and breed these charming animals, which are known for their distinctive reddish fur and gentle appearance.

Sumatran Orangutans

Sumatran orangutans were presented to Ichikawa from Medan in North Sumatra, Indonesia, in 1992. The zoo has successfully raised orangutans over the years, and a third offspring was born in 2018.
