Sarutahiko Shrine

A Sacred Shrine Dedicated to the Deity Who Guides People on Their Paths

A Shrine of Guidance and Good Fortune

Sarutahiko Shrine is located near the Inner Shrine of Ise Jingu, upstream along the Isuzu River in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. It enshrines Sarutahiko Okami and his descendant, Ota no Mikoto.

According to Japanese mythology, Sarutahiko Okami guided Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu, during his descent from heaven to earth. Because of this role as a guide, Sarutahiko Shrine is widely revered as a place to pray for guidance in life, traffic safety, and protection from unfavorable directions.

Sarutahiko Okami in Japanese Mythology

After guiding Ninigi-no-Mikoto on his descent to earth, Sarutahiko Okami settled upstream along the Isuzu River in Ise. According to the historical text Yamatohime-no-Mikoto Seiki, his descendant Ota no Mikoto presented the land along the upper Isuzu River to Princess Yamatohime as a suitable place to enshrine Amaterasu.

Ota no Mikoto’s descendants became known as the Uji no Tsuchigimi family and served the shrine for generations as Tamagushi Ouchi-bito, officials responsible for ceremonial duties at Ise Jingu. They originally worshipped Sarutahiko, their ancestral deity, as the guardian deity of their family residence. During the Meiji period (1868–1912), this private place of worship was established as Sarutahiko Shrine.

Distinctive Shrine Architecture

The main sanctuary features a distinctive gable-entry architectural style known as Sadahiko-zukuri. Its railings and torii gate are notable for their octagonal pillars, giving the shrine a unique architectural character.

Sarume Shrine: A Sanctuary for the Performing Arts

Within the shrine grounds stands Sarume Shrine, dedicated to Ame-no-Uzume-no-Mikoto, the goddess who encountered Sarutahiko Okami when Ninigi descended from heaven. The shrine faces the main sanctuary and is widely worshipped as a sacred place associated with performing arts and artistic success.

How Sarutahiko Okami Is Enshrined at Home

In traditional Japanese household Shinto altars, the talisman of Sarutahiko Okami is customarily placed slightly in front of the talisman of Amaterasu Omikami, the central deity of Ise Jingu. This arrangement reflects Sarutahiko Okami’s mythological role as a guide who leads the way forward.
