Tosenji Onsen Taki no Yu

A Relaxing Open-Air Hot Spring Accompanied by the Sound of a Waterfall

Tosenji Onsen Taki no Yu is a public bathhouse in Obara, Totsukawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, where visitors can unwind in harmony with nature. Set beside a mountain gorge, the hot spring is especially appealing for its open-air bath overlooking a nearby waterfall. The soothing sound of cascading water creates a peaceful atmosphere, making this an ideal place to relax and escape the stresses of everyday life.

Open-Air Bath with a Waterfall Just Steps Away

The waterfall visible from the outdoor bath is relatively small, measuring approximately three to four meters high. However, watching the water tumble down at close range and listening to its gentle splash create a calming experience. At night, the waterfall is illuminated, transforming the surroundings into a magical setting that feels quite different from the daytime scenery.

A Warm, Welcoming Bathhouse Filled with the Beauty of Wood

The facility occupies a building that was originally an inn and has been renovated as a public bathhouse. Separate indoor and open-air baths are available for men and women. Local timber from Totsukawa Village is used extensively throughout the building and bathing areas, creating a welcoming atmosphere filled with the natural fragrance of wood and a gentle hint of sulfur.

Combined with its simple, rustic setting beside the gorge, the wooden interiors make Taki no Yu a comfortable place to slow down and enjoy the tranquil mountain surroundings.

A Genuine Natural Hot Spring with Free-Flowing Water

Tosenji Onsen is an alkaline simple sulfur spring, with a source temperature of approximately 60°C and a pH of 9.1. The baths generally use free-flowing hot spring water directly from the source. Water may occasionally be added to adjust the temperature according to the season, but it is not circulated or reused.

The water is clear and colorless, with a smooth, gentle feel on the skin. Sulfur springs have traditionally been associated with relief from various ailments, including neuralgia and certain chronic gynecological conditions. These are traditional therapeutic claims rather than guaranteed medical effects, so visitors seeking treatment for a health condition should consult a qualified medical professional.

The History of Tosenji Onsen and the Totsukawa Hot Spring Area

Tosenji Onsen is said to have been discovered by En no Gyoja, the legendary ascetic associated with the origins of Japanese mountain worship. It is regarded as the oldest hot spring in Totsukawa Village. According to local tradition, the warlord Sakuma Nobumori also visited the spring in 1581, reflecting its long history as a place of rest and recuperation.

In 2004, Totsukawa Village became the first municipality in Japan to make a declaration promoting the use of natural hot spring water directly from its source. The village continues to uphold its commitment to authentic hot spring bathing, with facilities throughout the area avoiding artificial heating, water circulation, and disinfection treatments.

Access and Enjoying a Stay in the Mountain Valley

From JR Gojo Station on the JR Wakayama Line, take a Nara Kotsu bus for approximately two and a half hours to Totsukawa Village Office. From the bus stop, Taki no Yu is about a 10-minute walk.

The bathhouse is suitable for a day trip, while nearby inns and family-run guesthouses offer opportunities to stay overnight and experience the quiet atmosphere of the mountain valley. With its natural hot spring water, waterfall views, and deep connection to local history, Tosenji Onsen Taki no Yu is a worthwhile stop for travelers exploring Totsukawa Village.
