Sweet corn is one of Gunma Prefecture’s signature summer agricultural products. Gunma is one of Japan’s leading sweet corn-producing regions, with major growing areas including Showa Village, Numata City, Isesaki City, Naganohara Town, and Midori City.
Sweet corn is a crop whose flavor can change significantly depending on its freshness. One of Gunma’s major advantages is its location relatively close to large consumer markets in the Tokyo metropolitan area, allowing freshly harvested corn to reach consumers while it is still exceptionally fresh.
Gunma takes advantage of the different climates found throughout the prefecture. In the flatter, lower-elevation areas, shipments of sweet corn begin around June. As summer progresses, production gradually shifts toward cooler, higher-elevation areas.
This seasonal relay between growing regions allows fresh sweet corn to be shipped over an extended period. From summer into early autumn, visitors can enjoy corn coming into season in different parts of Gunma.
Farmers throughout Gunma use various cultivation techniques and carefully selected varieties to produce sweet, fresh, and flavorful corn.
Among the varieties grown in the region, “Gold Rush” is particularly popular. It is known for its pleasant sweetness and rows of neatly arranged golden-yellow kernels covering the entire cob. The thin, tender skins of the kernels also make this variety easy and enjoyable to eat.
Take a bite of the juicy kernels and you can immediately enjoy the characteristic sweetness, fresh flavor, and satisfying texture of summer sweet corn.
Sweet corn is sometimes described as a crop where “freshness is everything,” as its flavor can change noticeably after harvesting. For this reason, being relatively close to major consumer markets is a significant advantage for producers.
Taking advantage of its geographical location, Gunma continues to improve cultivation methods and carefully select varieties in order to produce sweet and exceptionally fresh corn.
The main season for Gunma-grown sweet corn is from around July through September. In particular, July and August are ideal months to enjoy its characteristic sweetness as a quintessential summer treat.
When visiting Gunma, be sure to try the fresh, naturally sweet sweet corn available from local growing areas. Its juicy texture and rich sweetness offer a delicious taste of summer in Gunma.
