Kawaba Ski Resort is a popular ski resort in Kawaba Village, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. Located on the southern slopes of Takade Mountain in the Hotaka mountain range, one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains areas, the resort’s ski slopes extend from approximately 1,290 to 1,860 meters above sea level.
The high elevation and abundant snowfall provide excellent conditions for high-quality powder snow, making Kawaba one of the destinations in Gunma known for its winter snow quality.
On clear days, visitors may even be able to see Mount Fuji and the Northern Alps in the distance. Both skiing and snowboarding are permitted throughout the ski area, attracting everyone from experienced riders to families.
One of Kawaba Ski Resort’s defining features is its collection of long cruising courses. A relatively high proportion of the slopes are designed for intermediate and advanced skiers, providing challenging terrain and long, enjoyable runs.
The Crystal Course is approximately 2,000 meters long. With very few sections where skiers need to stop because of flat terrain, it allows visitors to enjoy a continuous and exhilarating descent.
When combined with the Sakuragawa Course, the total cruising distance can reach approximately 3,300 meters, with a vertical drop of around 580 meters. This makes it possible to experience an extended run through the mountain scenery.
Advanced skiers can take on courses such as Unnamed Peak Trial and Takade Skyline, which feature ungroomed sections with maximum gradients of around 30 degrees.
A permanent mogul course with artificial bumps and an air jump is also available, providing an opportunity for experienced mogul skiers to practice their technique.
There is also a designated powder-snow zone where visitors can enjoy fresh snow when conditions permit.
The Sakuragawa Course and Shiratori Skyline feature relatively gentle slopes and are suitable for beginners and families with children.
A snow park is also available, with jumps and jib features for visitors who want to try freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
The resort’s distinctive base facility is the eight-story ski center known as Kawaba City.
Floors 1 through 6 serve as a multi-story parking facility with space for approximately 1,800 vehicles. One of the major conveniences is that visitors can move directly from the parking area to the ski slopes.
The building contains a lift-ticket counter, information desk, rental shop, ski and snowboard school, changing rooms, shops, and restaurants.
Dining options include the main restaurant Timberline, ramen restaurant Dabaiken, the North Indian restaurant Tandoor, and pizza restaurant Bosco, offering a variety of meals for visitors throughout the day.
Kawaba Ski Resort is designed primarily as a day-trip and short-stay ski destination. There are no accommodation facilities directly adjacent to the resort, and night skiing is not offered.
This creates an environment focused on daytime skiing and snowboarding. The resort is approximately 17 km from the Numata Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, making it convenient for visitors traveling from the Tokyo metropolitan area.
The final approach follows a mountain road, but a free shuttle bus operates from Roadside Station Kawaba Den-en Plaza at the foot of the mountain, providing an alternative way to reach the resort.
Kawaba Ski Resort opened in 1989. After undergoing several periods of business restructuring, it is now operated by Kawaba Resort Co., Ltd., part of the Nippon Ski Resort Development group.
The group operates several well-known ski resorts in Japan, including Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort and Ryuoo Ski Park, and applies its experience in ski resort management to the operation of Kawaba.
Kawaba Ski Resort combines high-quality powder snow, long and varied courses, and convenient facilities in a mountain setting surrounded by the Hotaka range.
Its convenient access and multi-story parking facility make it possible to enjoy a full day of winter sports without needing to stay overnight.
Whether you are looking for long cruising runs, challenging advanced terrain, a family-friendly slope, or simply the chance to experience the winter scenery of the Hotaka mountains, Kawaba Ski Resort offers a wide range of ways to enjoy a day in the snow.
