Shikinomori White World Oze Iwakura

A Prestigious Ski Resort with Vast Slopes

Shikinomori White World Oze Iwakura is one of the major large-scale ski resorts in the Kanto region, located in Katashina Village, Tone District, Gunma Prefecture. The expansive slopes stretch across the southeastern slopes of Mount Nishiyama, north of Mount Hotaka, and offer one of the largest ski areas in the region in terms of both vertical elevation and course area.

It is particularly popular as one of the leading destinations in Gunma’s powder snow area. With a wide variety of courses suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced skiers, as well as directly operated hotels and hot spring facilities, the resort functions as a comprehensive mountain resort suitable for both day trips and overnight stays.

A Vast Ski Area with 697 Meters of Vertical Difference and 18 Courses

The ski area features 18 courses and 11 lifts. One of its central attractions is the approximately 1,900-meter-long Iwakura Gondola Superway. The gondola provides access to a spectacular descent with a vertical difference of approximately 697 meters.

The upper section features steeper slopes, while the terrain becomes gentler toward the middle and lower sections, allowing visitors to enjoy an exhilarating long-distance cruise.

The famous Expert Course is designed for advanced skiers and includes an ungroomed section with a maximum gradient of 40 degrees. It provides a challenging experience even for experienced skiers.

For intermediate skiers, there are courses that have hosted the National Sports Festival of Japan, while the approximately 2.9-kilometer Milky Way is a popular course where visitors can enjoy a relaxed descent while taking in the surrounding scenery.

Even beginners can experience skiing from the upper mountain by using the Milky Way, allowing visitors of different ability levels to enjoy the mountain throughout the day.

Facing the ski area are magnificent views of Mount Nikko-Shirane and Mount Akagi. On clear days, skiing while looking out over these impressive mountains adds another memorable dimension to the experience.

The Nishiyama Slopes and a Rich Natural Environment

Behind the main ski area lies the Nishiyama Slopes. Located on a north-facing slope, this area tends to maintain stable snow conditions and can offer good skiing conditions well into the spring.

From Nishiyama, visitors can enjoy a direct view of Mount Hotaka, creating an opportunity to ski while surrounded by the spectacular natural scenery of the mountains.

A snow park was once available in the area, but today the resort focuses more on activities that make use of the natural terrain. Depending on snow conditions, for example, waves may be added to the Milky Way course.

Snowboarding is permitted throughout the ski area, making the resort popular with a broad range of winter sports enthusiasts.

Comfortable Accommodation and Hot Springs

Several accommodation facilities are located around the base of the slopes, including the directly operated Oze Iwakura Resort Hotel. These facilities preserve the traditional atmosphere of a classic Japanese ski resort while providing convenient access to the slopes.

Being able to warm up in a hot spring immediately after skiing is one of the advantages of staying at this type of resort.

Rooms — A Relaxing Space Surrounded by the Seasons

A variety of room types are available, including Japanese-style, Western-style, and Japanese-Western rooms. The accommodation can cater to a wide range of travelers, from families to solo visitors.

Guests can enjoy a peaceful stay surrounded by the clear highland air and quiet natural environment.

Hot Springs — The Gentle Waters of Ichiyama-no-Yu

The hotel offers hot spring bathing using water drawn from the Ichiyama-no-Yu hot spring source. The gentle quality of the water is locally appreciated as a beauty-enhancing hot spring and provides a soothing way to relax tired muscles after skiing or sightseeing.

Day-use bathing is also available, making the hot spring popular with both local residents and visitors.

Cuisine — Japanese Meals Featuring Seasonal Gunma Ingredients

Another highlight is the Japanese-style cuisine prepared using an abundance of seasonal ingredients from Gunma. Carefully prepared dishes with gentle, traditional flavors provide a satisfying way to enjoy the region’s culinary character during a stay.

Improved Access and Convenience

From the Numata Interchange of the Kan-Etsu Expressway, the resort is approximately 37 kilometers away via National Routes 120 and 401, taking around 60 minutes by car.

The former Shiisaka Pass, once considered a difficult section of the route, became easier to travel after the opening of a tunnel, improving access to the resort during the winter season.

Parking is free on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, standard vehicles are charged 1,000 yen, although vehicles carrying four or more people can park free of charge, making the resort convenient for groups traveling together.

A Prestigious Ski Resort That Continues to Evolve

Since opening in 1974, Shikinomori White World Oze Iwakura has continued to develop with the times. Improvements have included the introduction of the gondola, expansion of the Nishiyama area, and installation of an IC card-based lift gate system.

The resort has also served as a venue for the Gunma National Sports Festival three times, establishing a history as a venue for competitive skiing as well.

A Complete Mountain Resort for Winter Getaways

Shikinomori White World Oze Iwakura combines high-quality powder snow, expansive slopes, hot springs, and comfortable accommodation to create a comprehensive winter resort experience.

Whether visiting for a day of skiing or staying overnight, guests can enjoy the mountain at their own pace. With its extensive ski area, beautiful natural surroundings, relaxing hot springs, and resort-style accommodation, it is one of the representative winter attractions of Katashina Village.
