Mount Mitsumine is a 1,123-meter-high mountain that straddles Minakami Town and Numata City in Gunma Prefecture. Because mountains with the same name can be found in various parts of Japan, it is also known as Joshu Mitsumineyama to distinguish it from them.
Recognized as one of the 100 Famous Mountains of the Kanto Region and the 100 Famous Mountains of Gunma, it is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
The name Mitsumine, meaning “Three Peaks,” comes from the three peaks that make up the mountain: Gokanmine to the north, Fukikaeshimine in the center, and Oibomine to the south. The northernmost Gokanmine is the highest point of the mountain.
The mountain extends from north to south and is characterized by relatively gentle ridges and slopes. From certain viewpoints, its broad, flat-topped shape resembles a plateau or table, giving the mountain a particularly distinctive appearance.
Among the many mountains of Gunma, Mitsumine stands out for its unusual and impressive landscape.
Mount Mitsumine is also fascinating from a geological perspective. The middle and lower sections of the mountain are formed largely from the Mitsumine Formation, geological strata deposited by a massive pyroclastic flow approximately 11 million years ago.
The upper sections contain Tone Welded Tuff, which was formed by pyroclastic flows approximately 7 million years ago.
These ancient volcanic events played an important role in creating the mountain’s present-day shape and terrain. For hikers, walking the trails while considering the geological history beneath their feet offers another way to appreciate the scale of nature’s forces.
Located on the middle slopes of Mount Mitsumine is Kawachi Shrine. The shrine has a long history and is said to have been deeply revered by the lords of Numata Castle in the past.
Surrounded by a quiet forest, the shrine has a serene and sacred atmosphere. From the shrine grounds, visitors can see famous mountains including Mount Akagi and Mount Hotaka, while the urban area of Numata spreads out below.
The site is also known as an excellent viewpoint, offering beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons.
Mount Mitsumine has relatively few steep sections and features generally gentle trails, making it an approachable destination for beginner hikers.
The distance from Kawachi Shrine to Gokanmine, the summit, is approximately 5 kilometers, taking around two hours to complete under typical conditions.
In spring, delicate wildflowers such as Asian skunk cabbage and dogtooth violets bloom along the trail. Fresh green foliage creates a refreshing atmosphere in early summer, while autumn brings brilliant colors to the mountain slopes.
The gentle trails provide an opportunity to enjoy the surrounding nature at a relaxed pace.
From Gokanmine, the summit of Mount Mitsumine, visitors can look toward the northwest and see the renowned Mount Tanigawa.
On clear days, magnificent mountain ranges stretch across the horizon, offering expansive views of the dynamic landscape of northern Kanto.
This panoramic scenery is one of the highlights of the hike and one of the reasons many hikers are drawn to return to Mount Mitsumine.
Lake Mitsumine, a reservoir located in the southern part of the mountain, plays an important role in supporting local agriculture through irrigation.
At the southern end of the mountain, there is also a paragliding launch site, where visitors can enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery from the air.
The Mitsumineyama Tunnel, part of the agricultural road known as the Tone-Numata Boukyo Line, passes through the mountain from east to west, providing convenient access to the surrounding areas.
Mount Mitsumine combines a gentle mountain landscape, abundant natural beauty, and a long tradition of religious worship.
Its distinctive table-like form, three interconnected peaks, and expansive views from the summit create a memorable experience for visitors.
As you hike through this scenic mountain spanning Minakami Town and Numata City, you can experience both the vitality of nature and traces of the region’s history and spiritual traditions.
With a different character in every season, Joshu Mitsumineyama is an inviting destination for travelers looking to enjoy a peaceful and memorable mountain experience in Gunma.
