Michi-no-Eki Nakayama Basin (Roadside Station)

A Relaxing Base for Experiencing the Charms of Takayama Village

Michi-no-Eki Nakayama Basin is a roadside station located along Prefectural Route 36 in Takayama Village, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. Set amid peaceful rural landscapes with views of the magnificent Minamiyama Mountains, it is a unique roadside station that combines hot springs and accommodation facilities.

During the day, visitors can enjoy beautiful satoyama scenery, while at night the area offers spectacular views of the star-filled sky. The facility includes a farmers’ market selling fresh local produce, a restaurant, a day-use hot spring, a foot bath, accommodation cottages, and a spacious park, making it an appealing place not only for a short stop but also for spending an entire day.

Farmers’ Market Filled with Seasonal Local Produce

The farmers’ market offers a wide selection of freshly harvested vegetables, seasonal fruits, locally grown rice, and handmade processed foods prepared by residents of Takayama Village.

Takayama Village experiences significant differences in temperature between day and night and is blessed with clean water. These conditions help produce vegetables and fruits known for their natural sweetness and rich flavor.

The village’s branded rice, “Tsukiakane”, is carefully selected from rice with a taste score of 80 or higher. It is known for its pleasant sweetness and chewy texture and remains delicious even after cooling.

In particular, the milky-type varieties have a soft, chewy texture and can be blended with other varieties to create especially fluffy cooked rice. Limited quantities of naturally grown rice produced without agricultural chemicals or fertilizer and dried naturally in the sun are also available.

Other popular products include juices and jams made with local blueberries, apples, and grapes, fully ripened honey from acacia and Japanese horse chestnut flowers, handmade konjac made from fresh konjac potatoes, miso, pickles, and prepared foods.

One specialty that has been popular since its introduction is “Soba Inari”, featuring buckwheat noodles inside sweetly seasoned fried tofu pouches. Enjoying it with a little wasabi is a favorite way to eat this local specialty.

The traditional Takayama cucumber is another local specialty, prized for its crisp texture and refreshing juiciness. Natural-yeast bread, various types of manjū sweets, and other desserts are also available, making souvenir shopping part of the fun.

The Relaxing “Omotenashi Hall”

Inside the facility, the Omotenashi Hall provides a freely accessible rest area decorated with colorful hanging hina dolls.

Visitors can enjoy a boxed lunch or light meal purchased at the roadside station while looking through the windows at the surrounding mountains and peaceful rural landscape. It is a pleasant place to take a break during a journey.

Relaxing with a Foot Bath and Local Cuisine

Foot Bath

The foot bath features the pleasant aroma of Japanese cypress and allows visitors to enjoy a relaxing hot spring experience while looking out over the Minamiyama Mountains and surrounding rice fields.

It operates mainly from spring through autumn and is an ideal place to take a refreshing break during a road trip.

Asahi Shokudo Restaurant

Asahi Shokudo offers a wide range of dishes, including noodles, set meals, and rice bowls. Its dishes make use of local ingredients and offer simple yet flavorful tastes that add another dimension to the enjoyment of traveling through Takayama Village.

Takayama Onsen Fureai Plaza — Natural Hot Springs Beneath the Stars

Located alongside the roadside station, Takayama Onsen Fureai Plaza is a day-use hot spring facility with an impressive stone exterior reminiscent of a European castle.

Built on a small hill, the facility enjoys an excellent location overlooking mountains and rural landscapes during the day and a spectacular starry sky at night.

The spring water is a sodium-calcium chloride hot spring with mildly alkaline, low-osmotic-pressure, high-temperature characteristics. The source is called “Ibuki-no-Yu”, and the warm water provides a relaxing bathing experience.

Large Baths, Open-Air Baths, and Saunas

The bathing area features indoor baths, open-air baths, and both high-temperature and low-temperature saunas. The men’s and women’s bathing areas alternate weekly, allowing visitors to experience different views and atmospheres depending on the day of their visit.

The large open-air bath, surrounded by beautiful stone walls, offers expansive views of the surrounding rice fields during the day and the starry sky at night. A reclining bath is also available, providing another comfortable way to relax.

The interior has high ceilings that create a spacious atmosphere, while the marble corridors are equipped with underfloor heating. The large 108-tatami-mat hall can be used for resting and dining, providing a comfortable space to relax after bathing.

Accommodation Cottages Surrounded by Nature

The adjacent accommodation area has eight cottages. Three types are available: Japanese-style rooms, rooms with open vaulted ceilings, and Western-style rooms with bunk beds. Each cottage can accommodate up to six guests.

Guests may bring their own food, and those staying at the cottages can use the baths at Fureai Plaza free of charge.

Set in a peaceful natural environment, the cottages provide a private space where families and friends can spend quality time together. They are also suitable for longer stays, allowing visitors to explore the many attractions of Takayama Village at a leisurely pace.

Takayama Fureai Park and Seasonal Attractions

Takayama Fureai Park covers approximately 1.5 hectares and features large playground equipment, including an 18-meter-long slide, a Tarzan rope, playground equipment for young children, and outdoor fitness equipment.

During summer, visitors can also enjoy water play with mist-spraying playground equipment, making the park particularly popular with families.

From the observation gazebo, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the area’s famous rice paddy art, which is generally at its best from July through August. The artwork changes gradually as the rice plants grow, creating an impressive living landscape. The roadside station provides an excellent viewpoint for seeing the artwork.

In early autumn, Chestnut Tiger butterflies migrate through the area, while illuminations are displayed during winter. The combination of the starry sky and sparkling lights creates a magical nighttime atmosphere.

Comprehensive Facilities and Convenient Services

The parking area provides spaces for 153 standard vehicles, six large vehicles, and six vehicles for visitors with disabilities. A fast-charging station for electric vehicles is also available.

The restroom building is available 24 hours a day and includes accessible facilities, allowing visitors to use the roadside station comfortably and conveniently.
