Oguna Hotaka Ski Resort

Natural Powder Snow and Enjoyable Long Cruising Runs

Oguna Hotaka Ski Resort, officially known as Katashina Village-operated Snow Pal Oguna Hotaka, is a village-run ski resort surrounded by the beautiful natural landscapes of Katashina Village in Tone District, Gunma Prefecture.

One of its main attractions is a long cruising run of approximately 3.5 kilometers, starting from an elevation of 1,828 meters. The resort is known for its high-quality natural powder snow and relatively relaxed atmosphere. Although several large ski resorts are located nearby, Oguna Hotaka is comparatively less crowded, making it a popular hidden gem for skiers and snowboarders looking to enjoy the slopes at a comfortable pace.

Enjoy a 3.5-Kilometer Run from 1,828 Meters

From the highest point of the ski area, visitors can enjoy a continuous run of approximately 3.5 kilometers while connecting courses with a variety of gradients. Cold, dry winds blowing across the mountains, including Mount Tanigawa and Mount Hotaka, help create fine, lightweight snow.

Another distinctive feature is that the ski area operates using natural snowfall rather than relying on artificial snowmaking. The conditions are particularly impressive after fresh snowfall, making Oguna Hotaka a well-known destination for skiers seeking natural powder.

The Smart First Track ticket also provides an opportunity to access the freshly groomed slopes early in the morning. Skiing down quiet slopes illuminated by the morning sunlight offers a particularly refreshing experience.

A Snow Park and Facilities for All Generations

Oguna Hotaka features a snow park equipped with a variety of kickers and jib features, making it especially popular with snowboarders and freestyle skiers. The layout takes advantage of the natural terrain and includes sections such as banks and spines that can be enjoyed as part of a continuous flow. The park offers challenges suitable for a range of ability levels.

The resort also provides facilities for visitors who do not ski or snowboard, as well as families with young children. A sledding area equipped with a snow escalator allows children to enjoy the snow more easily, while a kids’ area is available for those experiencing snow for the first time.

From beginners to advanced skiers, and from children to older visitors, the resort provides opportunities for everyone to enjoy winter activities in their own style throughout the day.

Access and Resort Facilities

The resort is approximately 25 kilometers from the Numata Interchange of the Kan-Etsu Expressway and can be reached via Gunma Prefectural Route 64. Although the route includes some relatively steep mountain roads, access is generally straightforward.

From JR Numata Station, the resort is approximately 50 minutes away by taxi.

Parking is free every day, allowing visitors to stay without worrying about parking fees. Several parking areas are located around the center house, and shuttle buses operate from some parking areas on weekends and public holidays.

The ski area consists of six lifts and nine courses. Although it is a medium-sized resort, its well-balanced layout provides a variety of skiing experiences. Several restaurants are also located mainly around the lower part of the slopes, offering warm meals where visitors can take a break.

Backcountry Opportunities and Safety Considerations

From the top lift area, experienced visitors can hike toward the Mount Mae-Hotaka area using equipment such as snowshoes. This has made the surrounding area increasingly attractive to backcountry skiers and snowboarders.

However, these areas are not designated as official ski resort courses, and participants are responsible for their own safety. Appropriate equipment, knowledge, and preparation are essential. Warning signs are also provided in the area to encourage visitors to take proper safety precautions.

A Ski Resort with Deep Local Roots

The resort first opened in 1975 as the National Hotaka Ski Resort. It later operated under the name Snow Pal Oguna Hotaka before adopting its current name, Oguna Hotaka Ski Resort, from the 2013–2014 winter season.

Over the years, the resort has undergone changes in its management structure and upgrades to its lifts while continuing to develop alongside the local community. Today, the Katashina Village Development Corporation serves as its designated manager, supporting the resort’s continued operation as a locally rooted winter destination.

Relax in a Hot Spring After Skiing

Day-use bathing facilities are also available near the ski slopes, allowing visitors to warm up in a hot spring after spending time outdoors.

With its beautiful natural surroundings, high-quality natural snow, and community-oriented atmosphere, Oguna Hotaka Ski Resort is one of Katashina Village’s notable winter attractions. It offers a combination of skiing, snow activities, mountain scenery, and post-ski relaxation for visitors seeking an enjoyable winter experience in Gunma.
