Gassan Wine is one of the signature local specialties of the Asahi area of Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. It is made using Japanese mountain grapes, a native variety that has long grown wild in the mountainous countryside surrounded by the Asahi Mountain Range.
These grapes, nurtured by the area’s rich natural environment, give Gassan Wine a distinctive character closely connected to the landscape and food culture of southern Yamagata.
Long before the word “wine” became widely familiar in Japan, people in the Asahi area are said to have collected wild mountain grapes growing in the surrounding mountains and used them to make mountain grape wine.
This tradition reflects the area’s long-standing relationship with the natural environment. The practice of making wine from locally available wild fruit became part of the region’s distinctive food culture, making use of the abundant resources provided by the mountains.
Beginning in 1972, research and development efforts were undertaken to create a full-fledged wine using locally grown Japanese mountain grapes. This marked an important step toward establishing a distinctive regional wine based on the area’s traditional ingredients.
In 1979, the producers obtained a license to manufacture fruit wine, and the product was officially given the name “Gassan Wine.”
Made from mountain grapes nurtured amid the rich natural surroundings of the Asahi Mountain Range, Gassan Wine is more than a local beverage. It is a specialty that conveys the history, traditions, and natural character of the Asahi area.
For visitors to Tsuruoka, tasting Gassan Wine is a unique way to experience one of Yamagata’s regional flavors and discover the close connection between the area’s mountain environment and its food culture.
