Izumi Nature Park is an urban park, designated as a scenic park, located in Wakaba Ward, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture. Away from the bustle of the city, the park offers visitors an opportunity to enjoy a rich natural environment.
Most of the park is designated as part of the Higashi-Chiba Suburban Green Space Special Conservation District, helping to protect its valuable natural surroundings. Izumi Nature Park is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing destination and has been selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites.
The park opened in 1969 and has since been enjoyed by local residents and visitors as a relaxing place to experience nature.
Izumi Nature Park is located approximately 11 kilometers from central Chiba City and covers an extensive area of approximately 42.5 hectares.
The park makes use of the natural undulating terrain of the Hokuso Plateau. The landscape is characterized by plateaus at around 50 meters above sea level and the Kanto Loam Layer, a thick layer of volcanic soil that covers much of the Kanto region.
Visitors can enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons, including cherry blossoms in spring and colorful autumn foliage. A wide variety of plants grow throughout the park, creating different landscapes depending on the season.
A particularly valuable natural feature is the remaining pure stand of alder trees at the southern end of the park. This woodland is carefully protected as part of the area’s natural heritage.
Izumi Nature Park has a variety of areas where visitors can enjoy seasonal flowers and plants. Some of the main highlights are introduced below.
The Cherry Blossom Viewing Plaza covers approximately 8,600 square meters and is one of the park’s most popular areas during spring.
Approximately 100 cherry trees bloom here, including trees originally transferred from the Shimousa Imperial Ranch operated by the Imperial Household Agency, as well as Somei Yoshino, weeping cherry, and Taiwan cherry.
The area is also home to a large and relatively uncommon Japanese bird cherry tree. During the cherry blossom season, many visitors come to enjoy picnics and flower viewing beneath the blossoms.
The Flowering Trees Plaza covers approximately 6,900 square meters and features a variety of flowering trees and shrubs that provide colorful scenery throughout the year.
Representative flowering plants include: wintersweet, flowering quince, kobushi magnolia, Stachyurus praecox, Japanese kerria, pearlbush, flowering peach, redbud, Spiraea cantoniensis, Viburnum plicatum var. plicatum, mock orange, Japanese dogwood, Hypericum patulum, St. John’s wort, gardenia, rose of Sharon, and crape myrtle.
Izumi Bridge is a suspension bridge measuring approximately 64.4 meters in length. It spans the area between the Upper Pond and Middle Pond and forms part of one of the park’s main walking routes.
The bridge is particularly scenic when surrounded by fresh green foliage in spring and early summer or colorful autumn leaves. The view of the suspension bridge across the pond is also one of the park’s attractive photo opportunities.
The Wetland Botanical Garden is an approximately 1,400-square-meter exhibition area consisting of wetlands and ponds. It features plants adapted to waterside environments.
From spring through autumn, visitors can observe a variety of wetland and aquatic plants.
Representative wetland plants: loosestrife, Japanese parsley, half-leaf water plantain, Japanese iris, and yellow flag iris.
Emergent plants: bogbean, yellow water lily, soft rush, bur-reed, cattails, Manchurian wild rice, and common reed.
Floating-leaved plants: yellow floating heart and water lilies.
The Wildflower Garden was established in 1979 to display wild plants native to the local region.
Since 1999, the garden has been redeveloped and maintained in cooperation with the local organization Chiba Shizen ni Shitashimu Kai, a group dedicated to helping people appreciate and learn about Chiba’s natural environment.
Representative wildflowers: dogtooth violet, Anemone raddeana, Japanese phacelia, Japanese clematis, golden-rayed lily, and Japanese toad lily.
