Izumo Taisha Kazusa Kyokai is a Shinto shrine located in Kariya, Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture. It is commonly known by locals as Kazusa Izumo Oyashiro.
The shrine’s principal deity is Okuninushi-no-Okami, widely revered in Japan as a deity of good relationships, matchmaking, and good fortune. A divided spirit, or sacred representation, of the deity enshrined at Izumo Taisha in Shimane Prefecture is worshipped here.
The shrine stands within the grounds of Kuniyoshi Shrine, which was established after the deity of Suwa from Shinshu was invited to the area. The chief priest of Kuniyoshi Shrine is also responsible for the management of Kazusa Izumo Oyashiro.
The history of Izumo Taisha Kazusa Branch Shrine dates back to 1866, during the late Edo period.
At that time, a villager from Sakuta Village named Fugaku achieved an outstanding performance in a sumo tournament held as an offering at Izumo Taisha. As a result, he was granted a shinji, a sacred seal or symbol associated with a Shinto deity.
This led to the construction of a temporary sanctuary and marked the beginning of the shrine as a branch of Izumo Taisha.
The main sanctuary was completed in 1891. The following year, in 1892, a relocation ceremony was held to transfer the sacred object of worship to the newly completed sanctuary.
The grounds were renovated in 2014, bringing the shrine to approximately its present appearance.
Various Shinto rituals and festivals are held throughout the year at Izumo Taisha Kazusa Branch Shrine.
In addition, a Tsukinami-sai, or monthly regular ritual, is held on the first day of every month.
Two additional shrines stand within the precincts:
Get off at Kuniyoshi Station on the Isumi Railway. The shrine is approximately a 10-minute walk from the station.
