Ohara Beach is a beautiful beach in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture, known both as a summer swimming destination and as a popular place to watch the first sunrise of the New Year. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the beach attracts local residents as well as visitors from across Japan.
Every year, Ohara Beach is opened as Ohara Swimming Beach from around mid-July to mid-August. During the swimming season, the beach becomes lively with visitors enjoying the sea and sandy shoreline.
Facilities available during the season include public toilets, showers, and a parking area, providing a convenient setting for a day at the beach.
The original Ohara Swimming Beach was once a small beach located next to Ohara Fishing Port, on the south side of the Shiota River. Around 1970, improvements and expansion of the fishing port led to the swimming beach being relocated to its present location on the north side of the river.
The former swimming beach was depicted by manga artist Yoshiharu Tsuge in his short manga Seaside Scenes (Umibe no Jōkei). The work provides a glimpse of the beach as it appeared before its relocation.
Today, Ohara Swimming Beach stretches for approximately 300 meters along the Hinoura coastline. The beach has a gently sloping, shallow shoreline and generally calm waves, making it particularly popular with families.
A distinctive facility with a spiral staircase provides access to showers, toilets, and vending machines. A free parking area is located nearby, making the beach convenient for visitors arriving by car.
Ohara Beach is also a popular destination on New Year’s Day, when many people arrive early in the morning to watch the first sunrise of the year.
Standing on the beach and watching the sun rise over the vast Pacific Ocean is a memorable way to welcome the New Year. The wide-open coastal scenery provides a particularly impressive setting for this traditional Japanese New Year’s experience.
During the designated summer swimming season, lifeguards and beach huts are provided at designated swimming beaches in Chiba Prefecture. Outside the official swimming season, however, these safety services are not available.
For this reason, visitors are advised to avoid swimming outside the official swimming season. Even when the weather appears calm, ocean conditions can change quickly, so visitors should always prioritize safety.
