Taito Cape (Taitozaki)

A Scenic Headland with a Lighthouse and Ocean Views

Cape Taito, also known as Taitozaki, is a scenic headland at the southern end of Kujukuri Beach in Isumi City, Chiba Prefecture. Located on the eastern edge of the Boso Hills, the cape is part of the Minami Boso Quasi-National Park and is known for its dramatic coastal scenery, rich natural environment, and long history.

The cape is home to the iconic Taitozaki Lighthouse, a white lighthouse overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The area is also locally known by the romantic nickname “Cape Venus of Love.”

Geography and Scenic Landscapes

Cape Taito is characterized by a rugged coastal landscape formed mainly from sandy tuff. The elevation ranges from approximately 10 meters to a maximum of 68.8 meters, while the coastline stretches for about 4.5 kilometers with numerous changes in elevation and shape.

Steep cliffs, sea-eroded cliffs, rocky shores, and waves crashing against offshore rocks create an impressive landscape facing the Pacific Ocean. This rugged coastline forms a striking contrast with the long, gently curving sandy beach of Kujukuri Beach to the north.

Natural Environment

At the southern end of the cape lies the Taito Coastal Plant Community, a valuable habitat for plants that are specially adapted to coastal conditions. It was among the first sites in Japan to be designated as a National Natural Monument.

The area supports numerous coastal plant species and is an important location for observing the distinctive vegetation of the Boso Peninsula. Nature lovers can combine a visit to the cape with a walk through the surrounding coastal environment.

History of Cape Taito

From the Edo Period to the Present

Historical records and local accounts indicate that Cape Taito once extended several kilometers farther into the sea than it does today. However, the coastline gradually changed as a result of the Genroku Earthquake of 1703 and centuries of coastal erosion.

The cape’s present landscape was formed through this combination of natural disasters and long-term erosion. Today, the lighthouse stands somewhat inland from the former tip of the cape, where the surrounding area has been developed as a scenic destination.

The Cape During World War II

During World War II, Cape Taito was used for military purposes, and fortifications and other military facilities were constructed in the area. Most of these structures were removed after the war.

Over time, much of the former military site was lost to coastal erosion and now lies beneath the sea. The Taitozaki Lighthouse was later constructed farther inland and became one of the defining landmarks of the cape.

Taitozaki Lighthouse

Taitozaki Lighthouse is the most recognizable landmark at Cape Taito. Its white structure stands against the blue waters of the Pacific, creating a picturesque coastal scene.

From around the lighthouse, visitors can enjoy expansive views of the ocean and surrounding coastline. On clear days, the scenery extends toward Kujukuri Beach and the mountains of the southern Boso Peninsula.

How to Get to Cape Taito

By Public Transportation

From Taito Station on the JR Sotobo Line, it takes approximately 30 minutes on foot to reach Taitozaki Lighthouse. The walk provides an enjoyable way to experience the surrounding landscape before arriving at the cape.

By Car

For visitors traveling by car, Cape Taito can be accessed via the Ichihara Tsurumai Interchange or Mobara-Chonan Interchange on the Ken-O Expressway, followed by National Route 128.

A free parking area is available near the lighthouse, making the cape convenient to visit as part of a driving tour around the Boso Peninsula.
