Ryogenji Temple

Ryogenji Temple is a historic temple of the Jodo school of Buddhism located in Otaki Town, Isumi District, Chiba Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kanazawazan, and its principal object of worship is a statue of Amida Buddha accompanied by two attendants.

With a history dating back to the Warring States period, Ryogenji is closely connected with Honda Tadakatsu, a famous samurai commander who served Tokugawa Ieyasu. The temple is also associated with important cultural properties and the religious history of the Otaki area.

History of Ryogenji Temple

Foundation of the Temple

Ryogenji was founded in 1595, during the late 16th century. Its founder was Honda Tadakatsu, the lord of Otaki Castle, while the temple was established by the Jodo Buddhist priest Shoyo Ryogaku.

The temple was originally called Ryoshinji, taking its name from Honda Tadakatsu’s Buddhist posthumous name. It was later renamed Ryogenji after the Buddhist posthumous name of his son, Honda Tadatomo.

Reconstruction of the Main Hall

The present main hall was rebuilt in recent years after the previous building had deteriorated. While incorporating modern improvements, the reconstructed building retains a traditional temple atmosphere and provides a comfortable and peaceful space for visitors and worshippers.

Cultural Properties and Highlights

This valuable artwork is currently entrusted to the Otaki Castle Branch of the Chiba Prefectural Museum for preservation and exhibition. It represents an important connection between the temple and the samurai history of Otaki.

Amida Triad

The temple’s principal object of worship is an Amida Triad, consisting of Amida Buddha accompanied by two attendant figures. As an important symbol of Jodo Buddhism, the statue is deeply respected by worshippers.

The quiet atmosphere of the temple provides a peaceful setting in which visitors can appreciate the religious traditions and spiritual heritage of Japanese Buddhism.

Founder Shoyo Ryogaku

The Life of Ryogaku

Shoyo Ryogaku (1549–1634) was born as the third son of Takagi Taneyoshi, a senior retainer of the Chiba clan in Shimosa Province. From an early age, he was knowledgeable in scholarship, Japanese poetry, and Shinto studies and became known for his extensive learning.

He entered the Buddhist priesthood at the age of 13 and began his religious training at Tozenji Temple near Kogane Castle.

Rebuilding Temples After Years of War

Following Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s conquest of Odawara, Ryogaku continued his religious activities under the protection of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the new ruler of the region.

He devoted himself to rebuilding and establishing Jodo Buddhist temples in various parts of Japan. Among the temples associated with his activities were Gyokyoji Temple in Hitachi Province, Ryoshinji in Kazusa Province—today known as Ryogenji—and Shorinji Temple in Shimosa Province.

Close Ties with the Tokugawa Family

Ryogaku was highly respected by Tokugawa Ieyasu and his son Tokugawa Hidetada, and he was invited to give Buddhist teachings on numerous occasions.

When Hidetada became critically ill, Ryogaku, who was serving as the 17th chief abbot of Zojoji Temple, presided over his funeral. He was also involved in plans to develop Zojoji as a major temple associated with the Tokugawa shogunate.
