Makuhari Messe is a large-scale multi-purpose convention and event complex located in Makuhari New City, Mihama Ward, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture. It hosts major exhibitions, conventions, concerts, sporting events, and other large-scale gatherings from Japan and around the world.
With its extensive facilities and enormous exhibition spaces, Makuhari Messe is regarded as one of Japan’s leading exhibition and event venues. Its architecture has also received considerable recognition, including the 32nd and 40th BCS Awards, the IAITA Quaternario Award, and the 5th Chiba Prefecture Architectural Culture Award.
Makuhari Messe was designed in the early 1980s as part of Chiba Prefecture’s development plan for Makuhari New City. It opened in October 1989 as the Chiba Prefecture Japan Convention Center International Exhibition Halls.
At the time, the aging Tokyo International Exhibition Center was causing large-scale events to move to other venues. Combined with the economic boom of the late 1980s, this created strong demand for the new convention center.
Makuhari Messe got off to a successful start, welcoming 10 million visitors within just one year and two months of its opening.
The complex was designed by renowned Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, who received major international honors including the Praemium Imperiale and the Pritzker Prize.
Construction involved several major Japanese construction companies, including the country’s five leading general contractors.
The complex has one basement level and three floors above ground. It covers approximately 217,000 square meters, with a total floor area of approximately 165,000 square meters.
Makuhari Messe is mainly composed of four major facilities:
International Exhibition Halls 1–8 form an enormous exhibition area extending approximately 516 meters in length.
Each hall provides approximately 6,750 square meters of column-free exhibition space. Movable partitions allow the halls to be divided and configured according to the requirements of individual events.
With ceiling heights ranging from approximately 15 to 30 meters, the halls can accommodate a wide variety of exhibits, displays, machinery, and other large installations.
Halls 9–11 were added in 1997. Their flexible layouts and movable partitions allow them to accommodate large and heavy exhibits.
The three halls have a combined exhibition area of approximately 18,000 square meters. Hall 9 alone measures approximately 9,000 square meters, while Halls 10 and 11 each provide approximately 4,500 square meters.
Makuhari Event Hall has an arena area of approximately 3,098 square meters. It features 3,948 fixed seats and 912 movable seats, with approximately 3,000 additional temporary seats possible depending on the event.
For sporting competitions, the arena can accommodate up to three basketball or volleyball courts, demonstrating its flexibility as a multi-purpose venue.
In fiscal 2019, Makuhari Messe hosted approximately 903 events and welcomed around 6.99 million visitors.
The venue has hosted many major events that attract visitors from across Japan and overseas, including the Tokyo Motor Show, Tokyo Game Show, CEATEC, and SUMMER SONIC.
Makuhari Messe is also a major venue for music events and live performances. Special music programs such as Music Station SUPER LIVE and THE MUSIC DAY have been broadcast from the venue.
The complex has also hosted live concerts by numerous popular Japanese artists, including GLAY, Sakanaction, and Nogizaka46.
With its large flexible spaces, Makuhari Messe is capable of hosting major international sporting competitions. Past events have included the World Figure Skating Championships, the World Judo Championships, and the World Table Tennis Championships.
During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, several Olympic competitions were held at Makuhari Messe, including fencing, wrestling, and taekwondo.
The venue also hosted Paralympic competitions, including goalball and wheelchair fencing.
Makuhari Messe is one of Japan’s major venues for large-scale exhibitions, conventions, concerts, and sporting events. Its enormous exhibition halls, flexible event spaces, and extensive facilities allow it to accommodate gatherings of many different types and scales.
For visitors, Makuhari Messe is particularly interesting because the experience can vary greatly depending on the event being held. From international trade shows and technology exhibitions to video game events, music festivals, concerts, and sporting competitions, the venue plays an important role in Japan’s event and entertainment scene.
Located in Makuhari New City, the complex is also surrounded by shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, and other attractions, making it a convenient destination to combine with sightseeing in the wider Makuhari and Chiba area.
