Oze and Numata offer tourist attractions such as Kichijoji Temple, old houses, and Haruna Shrine; tourist events such as the Hoshi Festival, Numata Festival, and Kawaba Festival; and local delicacies such as konjac, local sake, and konjac cuisine.
Numata, located in the northern part of Gunma Prefecture, has the Tone River and the Katashina River flowing through it, and mountainous areas such as Mount Akagi and Mount Kesamaru. Akagi is one of the three Jomo-sanzan mountains (along with Mt. Haruna and Mt. Myogi), and is selected as one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan and one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan, making it a representative mountain of Gunma Prefecture.
Many tourists visit the mountain because of its well-maintained mountain trails and walking paths. Akagi is home to butterflies, wild birds, and wakasagi (smelt), and in winter, visitors can enjoy wakasagi angling from the ice in the Onuma swamp.
The summit of the mountain is the Prefectural Akagi Park with its rich natural environment, a visitor center, campgrounds, tennis courts, and other facilities.
Along the Katashina Valley in Numata, there is a hot spring resort called Oojin Onsen-kyo, which is effective for skin diseases and wounds, and is lined with historic ryokan (Japanese-style inns) and hotels. Surrounded by nature, the area can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons with its autumn leaves and fresh greenery.
In winter, skiers and snowboarders from all over Japan come to Numata's Tanbara Ski Park to enjoy the powder snow. In summer, paragliding, golf, camping, and other leisure activities can be enjoyed to the fullest. 210 cherry trees are planted in Numata Park, where a cherry blossom festival is held during the blooming season.
Numata's local products include honey, dried sweetfish, apples, grapes, and kiwis. A typical local dish is dango soup, which is made by simmering flour dumplings and local vegetables, and can be tasted at restaurants that display a red flag saying "Numata's specialty dango soup available. Miso manju buns with a savory sweet and spicy miso sauce are also sold.
Oze is a marshland that straddles Gunma, Fukushima, and Niigata Prefectures and has been selected as one of the 100 most scenic spots in Japan, where precious plants such as mizubashou and mizugoke grow thickly. The wooden footholds are well maintained, so anyone can easily enjoy hiking.
If you want to make a round trip of Oze, you can use mountain huts and rest areas by making a reservation in advance. Also, garbage is a problem in Oze, so be sure to take your garbage with you when you go sightseeing.
