Calendula Manju

An Elegant Japanese Sweet with a Floral Aroma

A Refined Manju with the Fragrance of Flowers

Calendula Manju is a distinctive local Japanese sweet from Shirahama Town in Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. Shirahama is well known as a flower-viewing destination, and it is also famous for being one of Japan’s leading production areas for calendula. This colorful flower is incorporated into a traditional Japanese confection to create a unique regional specialty.

Delicate Sweetness and the Flavor of Calendula

The manju has a soft, plump outer layer filled with white bean paste blended with calendula petals. The vivid orange color of the petals and their subtle floral aroma give the sweet an elegant and luxurious character.

Another appealing feature is its moderate sweetness. Rather than being overwhelmingly sugary, the filling has a delicate flavor that allows the floral notes of the calendula to stand out.

“Kinsenka no Sato” from Shirahamado

One version of this specialty, known as “Kinsenka no Sato,” is sold by Shirahamado, a long-established confectionery shop with more than 140 years of history. The shop is also known for Boshu-style sake manju, another traditional specialty of the region.

Perfect with Tea

Calendula Manju pairs wonderfully with both Japanese green tea and black tea. Its gentle sweetness and floral aroma make it an ideal accompaniment for a relaxing tea break.

A Taste of Minamiboso’s Flower Culture

Combining traditional Japanese confectionery with locally grown calendula, Calendula Manju offers a memorable taste of Shirahama’s distinctive flower culture. Its beautiful appearance, subtle fragrance, and refined sweetness make it an appealing souvenir and a delightful treat for visitors to Minamiboso.
