Mount Iyogatake

A Hike to the “Matterhorn of Boso”

Mount Iyogatake is a 336.3-meter-high mountain in the Boso Hills of Minamiboso City, Chiba Prefecture. With its distinctive pointed peak and rocky appearance, the mountain is known as the “Matterhorn of Boso” and the “Awa Myogi”.

Mount Iyogatake has also been selected as one of the 100 Famous Mountains of the Kanto Region. It is particularly notable because it is said to be the only mountain in Chiba Prefecture whose official name includes the Japanese character “岳” (take), meaning a steep or prominent mountain peak.

Although the mountain is not particularly high, its striking summit can be recognized from a distance. The summit offers a spectacular 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and coastline.

The Origin of the Name “Iyogatake”

The name Iyogatake is traditionally associated with the Inbe clan of Awa Province, who are said to have migrated to the Boso Peninsula under the leadership of Ame-no-Tomi-no-Mikoto, a legendary pioneer of Awa.

According to tradition, the migrants named the mountain after Mount Ishizuchi in Iyo, their homeland in Shikoku. The name is therefore said to preserve a sense of nostalgia for the landscape they had left behind.

The mountain’s other names, including the “Matterhorn of Boso” and “Awa Myogi,” refer to its distinctive steep and rocky appearance. The comparison with the famous Matterhorn in the Alps comes from the pointed profile of the summit.

Hiking Mount Iyogatake

The Main Hiking Route

The standard hike to Mount Iyogatake begins at Heguri Tenjin Shrine, also known as Heguri Kurii Tenjin Shrine, at the foot of the mountain.

The trail from the trailhead to the summit is approximately 1 kilometer and takes around 40 minutes. The short distance makes it possible to reach the summit without a long trek, but the upper section provides a more adventurous hiking experience.

From the middle section toward the summit, there are several consecutive fixed-chain sections. These steep sections require care, but they are also one of the highlights of the climb for hikers looking for a little more excitement.

Seiryu Gongen Shrine

Along the trail is a small shrine known as the Seiryu Gongen Shrine. It has long been valued as a place of local religious worship and provides an interesting connection between the mountain’s natural environment and the area’s traditional beliefs.

Reaching the shrine requires descending a set of steps from the main trail. If time and conditions allow, it is worth making the short detour to experience this quiet spiritual site.

The Summit and Its 360-Degree View

After climbing the chain sections, hikers reach the summit. Although the summit area is relatively small, it opens up dramatically and provides an impressive 360-degree panorama.

Looking south, visitors can see Mount Tomisan, another well-known mountain in Chiba Prefecture. On clear days, the Pacific Ocean can be seen beyond the mountain, creating an expansive view across the Boso landscape.

The combination of the rocky summit and the broad coastal panorama is one of the main reasons Mount Iyogatake is popular with hikers.
