Roadside Station Nanbo Paradise is a popular tourist destination in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. It is located along Chiba Prefectural Route 257, known as the Boso Flower Line, a scenic coastal road that has been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Best Roads.”
The site is home to Aloha Garden Tateyama, one of Japan’s largest tropical and subtropical botanical and zoological gardens. Roadside Station Nanbo Paradise occupies a spacious site of approximately 10.7 hectares, directly overlooking Heisaura Beach. In addition to serving travelers with rest facilities, it functions as an important center for providing information about sightseeing and local attractions in southern Chiba.
Its location along the Boso Flower Line makes it particularly attractive for road trips. Depending on the season, visitors can enjoy the surrounding coastal scenery and colorful flowers while traveling through the southern part of the Boso Peninsula.
Nanbo Paradise first opened in October 1970. It was originally operated by the Chiba Prefectural Road Tourism Corporation and included a botanical garden, zoo, and accommodation facilities.
In 1976, management was transferred to Chiba Prefecture, with operations subsequently entrusted to the Chiba Prefectural Tourism Corporation.
In 2006, the designated management system was introduced, and Ocean Veil Tateyama Co., Ltd. took responsibility for operating the facility. However, the number of tourists declined following the Great East Japan Earthquake, making continued operation difficult.
In 2012, management returned to Chiba Prefecture, and operations were once again entrusted to another private operator.
Following major renovations, the facility reopened in 2014 as Aloha Garden Tateyama. The accommodation facility was also renovated and reopened that same year as Tateyama Onsen Senri no Kaze.
The roadside station facilities are available 24 hours a day, making the complex a convenient stopping point for travelers exploring southern Chiba by car.
A public telephone is also available within the facility.
Restaurant Waikiki serves Hawaiian-style dishes in a tropical atmosphere. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and until 7:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.
The Hawaiian-style shop sells a wide selection of products, including jewelry, handmade goods, and tropical-themed items. It is a convenient place to look for a souvenir of your visit.
Aloha Garden Tateyama is one of Japan’s largest facilities where visitors can experience tropical and subtropical plants and animals. The garden features greenhouses, animal areas, a hula dance stage, and an observation deck, creating a distinctly tropical atmosphere.
The botanical garden includes a large greenhouse reaching approximately 20 meters in height and a series of connected greenhouses extending for about 300 meters.
Inside, visitors can see colorful tropical flowers such as hibiscus and bougainvillea, as well as unusual tropical fruits. The warm greenhouse environment provides a striking contrast to the surrounding coastal landscape.
The Animal Area gives visitors the opportunity to see and interact with animals including capybaras, goats, and parrots. The area is designed to be enjoyable for visitors of all ages, making it especially appealing to families traveling with children.
At the center of the garden is Hula Terrace, a stage dedicated to hula dancing. Performances are held on weekends and public holidays, adding music and Hawaiian-style entertainment to the tropical garden experience.
From JR Tateyama Station, take a bus and get off at the Nanbo Paradise bus stop.
From the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line and Tateyama Expressway, take the Tom浦 Interchange and continue for approximately 20 minutes by car. Free parking is available at the facility.
