Loquat Soft-Serve Ice Cream

A Refreshing Soft-Serve Inspired by Southern Chiba’s Famous Loquats

Turning the Flavor of Boso Loquats into a Local Specialty

Loquat soft-serve ice cream is a popular local dessert created in Minamiboso City, southern Chiba Prefecture. It makes the most of the region’s famous specialty, Boso loquats, combining their gentle sweetness and delicate aroma with the smooth, creamy texture of soft-serve ice cream.

The result is a refreshing dessert with a subtle fruity sweetness, a clean finish, and a pleasantly creamy mouthfeel. It has become a favorite treat among visitors exploring the Boso Peninsula.

A Local Soft-Serve Created in 1995

Loquat soft-serve was developed in 1995 at Michi-no-Eki Tomiura Biwa Club in the Tomiura area of Minamiboso. From the beginning, the main challenge was how to preserve the delicate flavor and aroma of fresh loquats in a soft-serve dessert.

Loquats have a delicate fragrance that can easily be lost during heating and processing. To retain the fruit’s characteristic aroma, the developers used a specialized technique known as “vapor separation” to extract the aroma components. After extensive experimentation, they succeeded in creating a soft-serve with the gentle sweetness and fresh fragrance of loquats.

Made with Locally Grown Boso Loquats

The main ingredient is, naturally, Boso loquats, one of Minamiboso’s signature agricultural products. Large, juicy loquats harvested during the main season from May to June are carefully sourced from local farmers and processed for use in the dessert.

Boso loquats are known for their soft, juicy flesh and well-balanced sweetness and acidity. Their delicate flavor gives the soft-serve an elegant fruity character while preserving the refreshing qualities of the original fruit.
