Whale tare is a traditional specialty of southern Chiba’s Boso Peninsula. It is made from the meat of the Baird’s beaked whale, a toothed whale that can grow to around 12 meters in length. The whale meat is marinated in a seasoned dipping sauce and then dried naturally under the sun, creating a distinctive preserved food.
Whale tare has a particularly strong and characteristic flavor. It is made using a traditional style of Boso whale meat that is not completely drained of blood, giving the finished product its dark color and distinctive taste. It is commonly enjoyed as a snack with alcoholic drinks or as a side dish with a meal.
Whaling in southern Boso has a history dating back to the early 17th century. Hunting operations were once based in Katsuyama on the Tokyo Bay side of the peninsula. Today, whaling boats operate from the Wada area, where the tradition continues as part of the region’s coastal culture.
Whale tare is traditionally cut into thin pieces, making it particularly convenient to keep at home. Even when stored in the freezer, the thin slices do not necessarily need to be completely thawed before eating. They can easily be torn apart by hand, making this distinctive Boso preserved food practical as a ready-to-eat snack or side dish.
