Kumatori Exchange Center Rengakan - Brick Building

A Cultural Exchange Center Housed in a Historic Brick Building

Kumatori Exchange Center Rengakan is a community and cultural facility in Kumatori Town, Sennan District, Osaka Prefecture. The center was created through the preservation and adaptive reuse of a former cotton textile factory.

Recognized for its historical value and distinctive architecture, the building has received the Osaka Cityscape Architecture Award and has also been designated as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization. While preserving the character of its industrial past, Rengakan now serves as a center for lifelong learning, cultural activities, and community exchange.

From a Cotton Textile Factory to a Cultural Facility

The main building was constructed in 1928 as a cotton textile factory. In the late Meiji period, an earlier factory known as the Koya Factory was established in what is now the park area. A new factory, the Gomon Factory, was later added across the river during the early Showa period.

At its height, the factory complex covered approximately 20,000 square meters and included employee dormitories, a dining hall, and other facilities.

The factory ceased operations in 1992. Because of its historical importance, parts of the complex were preserved as designated cultural properties of Kumatori Town. In 2006, the site was recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization. In 2009, it was also registered as part of the Osaka Museum program.

Today, the former factory has been transformed into a cultural center where local residents can participate in educational programs, cultural activities, exhibitions, and community events.

Architectural Features

Rengakan retains the original brick walls from the factory’s construction, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of an early modern Japanese industrial facility.

One of its most distinctive features is the restored sawtooth roof, a characteristic design once commonly used for factories. This architectural feature helps preserve the appearance and atmosphere of the former textile works.

The building was designed by Tohata Architects & Engineers and constructed by Okumura Corporation. Inside, a gallery corridor approximately 30 meters long creates a pleasant circulation route through the facility.
