Tajiri Historical Museum (Island House)

A Historic Western-Style Residence Filled with Taisho-Era Charm

Tajiri Historical Museum is a historic building located in Yoshimi, Tajiri Town, Sennan District, Osaka Prefecture. The building is open to the public as a museum and is also affectionately known as “Island House.”

The building was constructed during the Taisho period (1912–1926) as a second residence for businessman Fusazo Taniguchi, who was known as the “Cotton King” for his success in the textile industry. Today, the facility is managed by Tajiri Town.

History

Fusazo Taniguchi was born in 1861 in Yoshimi Village, Hine District, Izumi Province, an area that is now part of Tajiri Town. He established a business in the spinning industry and founded Osaka Godo Spinning Company in 1900.

Taniguchi contributed to his hometown not only by establishing a spinning factory but also by building a second residence there and contributing to the local community through the taxes he paid.

The residence was constructed in 1922. In addition to serving as Taniguchi’s second home, it was also used as a training and accommodation facility.

After Taniguchi’s death, the property passed through the ownership of private companies and individuals. In 1993, it became the property of Tajiri Town and was opened to the public.

In 1996, the building was registered as a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property. It was later designated an Osaka Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.

Architectural Features

The Western-style residence incorporates the German architectural movement known as Jugendstil, giving the building a distinctive and elegant appearance. Its beautiful brick exterior is one of its most notable features.

The architect is unknown, although Takeo Yasui, who designed the Osaka Gas Building, has been suggested as someone who may have been involved in the design.

Next to the Western-style building is a two-story Japanese-style residence featuring a traditional tea room and Japanese garden. The property creates an appealing harmony between Western and Japanese architectural traditions.

Cultural Heritage Value

Tajiri Historical Museum is highly valued as an Osaka Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property.

The historic property includes the Western-style residence, Japanese-style residence, tea room, three storehouses, front gate, and rear gate. The three storehouses are known as the North Storehouse, Central Storehouse, and South Storehouse.

The entire site, including its beautiful Japanese garden, has been preserved as an important cultural heritage complex that reflects the lifestyle and architecture of the Taisho period.
