Okuyama Ameyama Nature Park is a large, nature-rich park located in Kumatori Town, Sennan District, Osaka Prefecture. Covering an extensive area of forests, hills, and lakeside scenery, the park is a popular place for local residents and visitors to relax in nature.
The park has been selected as one of the Osaka Midori 100, a selection of notable green spaces in Osaka, as well as one of the 100 Forests of Water Sources in Japan. These designations reflect the importance of its natural environment and water resources.
Development of Okuyama Ameyama Nature Park took place between 1980 and 1983, and the park was officially completed in July 1984.
The park covers approximately 130 hectares. Natural forests of Japanese red pine and Japanese cypress spread across the area, while numerous cherry trees add seasonal color to the landscape.
In spring, the cherry trees come into full bloom, creating one of the park’s most attractive seasonal scenes.
Several hiking trails run through the park, offering routes suitable for a range of abilities, from beginners to experienced hikers.
Viewpoints within the park offer expansive views toward Mount Izumi Katsuragi and Kansai International Airport. Visitors can enjoy the changing scenery throughout the four seasons while walking through the forest.
Eiraku Dam is one of the central features of the park. Construction began in 1965, and the dam was completed in 1968.
The dam was built upstream on the Midedani River and plays an important role in supplying irrigation water and tap water to the southern Sennan area of Osaka.
The area around Eiraku Dam is also known as a popular cherry blossom destination and has been selected as one of the Osaka Midori 100.
Every spring, approximately 1,000 Somei Yoshino cherry trees around Eiraku Dam reach full bloom, and the Eiraku Cherry Blossom Festival is held in the area.
When the cherry blossoms are illuminated by the warm glow of lanterns, the lakeside scenery takes on a particularly atmospheric appearance. The festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year and has become an important local event.
In the past, much of the park was covered by forests dominated by Japanese red pine, and matsutake mushrooms were also collected in the area.
However, the red pine forests were affected by pine wilt disease during the Showa period, resulting in a decline in the number of red pines.
Over time, konara oak and ubame oak grew in their place. Today, the park has a diverse forest where coniferous and broadleaf trees grow together.
Natural forests account for approximately 90 percent of the forested area, compared with around 10 percent for planted forests.
Okuyama Ameyama Nature Park is home to a variety of bird species. Visitors may encounter Japanese white-eyes, bush warblers, and brown-eared bulbuls, all of which can be observed in the area.
The park has also recorded sightings of species considered threatened, including the Steller’s sea eagle and owls. The area therefore plays an important role in preserving a diverse natural environment.
In 2005, the Outdoor Activity Fureai Plaza opened near the park. The facility provides opportunities to enjoy the outdoors through activities such as barbecues and nature classes.
It is particularly suitable for families and groups, providing an accessible way to experience the area’s natural surroundings.
One of the greatest attractions of Okuyama Ameyama Nature Park is the changing appearance of its natural landscape throughout the year.
Spring is especially popular for cherry blossoms, while autumn brings colorful foliage. Hiking and outdoor activities also provide opportunities to spend relaxing time surrounded by nature.
The combination of forest trails, seasonal scenery, and the lakeside environment of Eiraku Dam makes the park a pleasant destination for visitors seeking a break from the city.
Okuyama Ameyama Nature Park can be reached from within Osaka Prefecture by car or public transportation.
Parking facilities are available, making the park convenient for families and groups traveling by car. During busy seasonal periods, visitors should allow extra time for travel and parking.
