Yoichi’s cool and humid climate, abundant water, and clean air are ideal for whisky making.
Nikka Whisky Hokkaido Factory is a retro and stylish space with a quiet Scottish atmosphere in Yoichi, which has a climate similar to that of Scotland, the home of whiskey.
In addition to the factory tour, there is a Yoichi Original Whisky Store that sells valuable original whisky straight from the cask, and Northland, a store where you can buy a variety of souvenirs and other items.
At the Nikka Kaikan, visitors can sample whiskey and soft drinks, and enjoy a meal at the restaurant.
Ten buildings have been designated as national important cultural properties.
The distillery is currently the only distillery in the world that uses the traditional "direct coal-fired distillation" method.
It requires skilled craftsmanship, but the distillery's quality comes first, even if it is inefficient, in order to produce a rich, full-bodied flavor and aroma.
In 2002, they became the first malt whiskey distillery in Japan to be accredited by the Scotch Malt Whiskey Society (SMWS).
