Sakata Pond

Sakata Pond is a pond located in Sakata, Yokoshibahikari Town, Sambu District, Chiba Prefecture. Today, it serves as a regulating reservoir for the Boso Water Conveyance System, while the surrounding area has also been developed as a park enjoyed by local residents.

Surrounded by abundant nature, Sakata Pond is a pleasant destination where visitors can enjoy outdoor recreation while discovering the area’s geographical and historical heritage.

Geographical and Historical Background

From Lagoon to Regulating Reservoir

Sakata Pond is believed to have originally been a lagoon formed during the late Jomon period. As a sandbar developed and the coastline gradually retreated, water flowing from the Kuriyama River was pushed back by coastal currents, creating a body of water separated from the open sea.

The surrounding area was an important source of water and food for the people who lived here during the Jomon period. The natural environment of the Kuriyama River basin supported their daily lives and activities.

Several dugout canoes have been discovered at Sakata Pond, providing evidence of the importance of water transportation in ancient times.

The area around the pond is also rich in archaeological and historical sites. These include the Sanbu Ubayama Shell Midden, an important archaeological site representing the late Jomon period, as well as the remains of Sakata Castle and the Shibayama Kofun Group.

Changes to the Pond Over Time

During the Meiji period, Sakata Pond is believed to have covered more than three times its present area. The pond gradually became smaller as land was reclaimed and the surrounding area was developed.

Nearby Torihami Pond, meanwhile, was drained and reclaimed for agricultural use.

Sakata Pond’s Modern Role

A Regulating Reservoir for Water Management

Today, Sakata Pond plays an important role in water management. Water drawn from the Tone River is conveyed through the Kuriyama River system and temporarily stored at Sakata Pond near the Yokoshiba Pumping Station before being sent farther downstream.

This function forms part of the Boso Water Conveyance System, helping manage and distribute water resources in the region.

Fureai Sakata Pond Park

The approximately 21-hectare area surrounding Sakata Pond has been developed as Fureai Sakata Pond Park. Rich in plants and birdlife, the park provides a peaceful natural environment for both local residents and visitors.

The park can be enjoyed throughout the year for sports, picnics, cherry blossom viewing, and nature observation. Its combination of open green spaces, water, and recreational facilities makes it one of the area’s popular places for outdoor activities.

Facilities at Fureai Sakata Pond Park

Cherry Blossom Viewing Area

Approximately 40,000 trees, including Yoshino cherry trees, weeping cherry trees, and flowering dogwoods, are planted throughout the park.

In spring, the area becomes especially attractive as the cherry trees and other flowering plants come into bloom, drawing visitors who come to enjoy hanami, the traditional Japanese custom of viewing flowers.

Sports and Children’s Areas

A spacious lawn area of approximately 16,000 square meters provides plenty of room for a variety of activities. It can be used for light sports, picnics, community events, and other outdoor activities.

The park also includes an area where children can play, making it suitable for families as well as individual visitors.

Wetland Botanical Garden

The Wetland Botanical Garden protects and cultivates wetland plants, including species considered threatened with extinction in Japan.

Visitors may also observe wildlife such as dragonflies and small fish, making the garden a place to experience the importance of preserving wetland ecosystems.

Sports Zone

Development of Fureai Sakata Pond Park

The park was developed as part of efforts to combine water resource management with local community development.

Construction and improvements progressed from 1987 to 1992. In 1997, the comprehensive sports zone, including the athletics stadium and Wetland Botanical Garden, was completed.

The result is a multifunctional park where water management infrastructure, natural habitats, sports facilities, and open spaces coexist.

Access to Sakata Pond

By car: Sakata Pond is approximately a 10-minute drive from the Matsuo-Yokoshiba Interchange on the Chiba-Togane Road.

The area can also be reached by public transportation, making it accessible to visitors exploring Yokoshibahikari Town and the surrounding Kujukuri region.

A Place Where Nature, History, and Recreation Come Together

Sakata Pond has transformed over the centuries from a lagoon associated with the ancient coastline into an important water-management facility. Its archaeological discoveries and surrounding historic sites also provide clues to the area’s long history.

Today, Fureai Sakata Pond Park adds a recreational dimension to this historic landscape, offering cherry blossoms, wetlands, wildlife, open lawns, and a wide range of sports facilities.

For visitors to Yokoshibahikari Town, Sakata Pond is a pleasant destination where nature, local history, and outdoor recreation can all be enjoyed in one location.
