Togane Dam is a dam located in Togane City, Chiba Prefecture. It was constructed as part of the Boso Water Conveyance Project, a large-scale water resource development project designed to manage and supply water across the Boso Peninsula.
Although the dam’s own catchment area is relatively small, at approximately 0.6 square kilometers, Togane Dam plays an important role in the region’s water supply system.
Togane Dam forms part of an interconnected water conveyance system. Water from the Tone River is first introduced into the upper reaches of the Kuriyama River through the Ryoso Irrigation System’s No. 1 Pumping Station in Sawara, Katori City.
Water is then conveyed from the Yokoshiba Pumping Station in Yokoshibahikari Town to Togane Dam. Together with Sakata Regulating Reservoir along the route and Nagara Dam farther downstream, the system helps provide a stable water supply for local communities.
Togane Dam is approximately a 10-minute drive from JR Togane Station. The area around the reservoir is also used as a recreational space by local residents.
A 3.6-kilometer management road runs around the reservoir and is open to the public. It is popular with people who enjoy walking and jogging while taking in the surrounding scenery.
The reservoir created by Togane Dam is known as Tokigane Lake.
The name recalls the area’s natural environment approximately 500 years ago, when Japanese crested ibises, known as toki in Japanese, were said to have flown through the skies above this richly wooded landscape.
The construction of Togane Dam was planned as part of efforts to improve regional water resource management and create a more stable water supply system.
The Boso Water Conveyance Project was incorporated into Japan’s Water Resources Development Basic Plan in 1970.
Construction of the section between Yokoshiba and Nagara Dam began in 1971. In 1977, the Yokoshiba Pumping Station was completed, allowing a partial water supply to begin on a provisional basis.
