Chion-in Temple is the head temple of the Jōdo (Pure Land) school of Japanese Buddhism. Located in Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, it stands on a site closely associated with Hōnen, the founder of the Jōdo school. Hōnen established a hermitage in the Yoshimizu area here and began teaching his Buddhist beliefs. He also spent his final years at this location.
The temple complex features magnificent buildings, including the Miei-dō Hall and a monumental bell tower. Its impressive Sanmon Gate, designated a National Treasure of Japan, is renowned as the largest gate of its kind in the country, standing approximately 24 meters tall.
Located within the grounds of Chion-in Temple, Yūzen Garden is a peaceful Japanese garden where visitors can appreciate traditional landscape design and the beauty of nature. Situated in the southern part of the temple grounds, the garden offers a tranquil retreat from the bustle of Kyoto.
The garden features a pond, carefully arranged stones, and thoughtfully placed trees and plants. These elements work together to create a harmonious landscape that invites visitors to slow down, relax, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Yūzen Garden offers a different atmosphere throughout the year. In spring, cherry blossoms bring fresh color to the landscape. Summer reveals lush greenery, while autumn transforms the garden with vibrant red and golden foliage. In winter, snow can create a serene and picturesque scene.
These seasonal changes make the garden an appealing destination for visitors who want to experience the changing beauty of a traditional Japanese garden.
Chion-in Temple has a long and important history in Japanese Buddhism. Its grand architecture and sacred grounds reflect the development of the Jōdo Buddhist tradition and the cultural heritage of Kyoto.
The temple is also associated with Yūzen dyeing, a traditional Japanese textile-dyeing technique known for its intricate patterns and vivid colors. The garden’s name evokes this celebrated craft, which forms part of Kyoto’s rich artistic heritage.
With its monumental National Treasure gate, historic temple buildings, and beautifully landscaped garden, Chion-in Temple and Yūzen Garden offer visitors a memorable introduction to Kyoto’s religious and cultural traditions.
Whether you are interested in Buddhist history, traditional Japanese architecture, garden design, or seasonal scenery, this destination provides a rewarding experience in one of Kyoto’s most historic districts.
