Tofukuji Temple

One of the best places in Kyoto to view the autumn leaves

Tofukuji Temple is the head temple of the Tofukuji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism, located in Higashiyama Ward. It is a famous temple that conveys the Zen Buddhism culture of the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, and is ranked fourth among the “Five Temples of Kyoto” established after Ashikaga Yoshimitsu built Shokokuji Temple.
The oldest and largest temple complex in Japan was so magnificent that it is called “Tofuku no Goran-men,” but it was destroyed by repeated military fires and fires. It has been rebuilt each time.
The vast 20-square-meter precincts of the temple are home to many highlights, including the Sanmon Gate, a National Treasure, and the Hojo Garden, with its magnificent checkered pattern of moss and paving stones. The temple’s collection of cultural assets exceeds 5,000 items, including the National Treasure, the Silk-colored statue of Master Mokujun Shihan.
The temple is known as one of the best places in Kyoto to view the autumn foliage, and from the Tsutenkyo Bridge, visitors can see the “Tsutenkyo-yo” (autumn leaves), in which the leaves split into three.
